Omar's Oyster Outing

If you’ve never played the original game ‘Omar’s Oyster Outing,’ I could probably forgive you; screenshots of a single pixel being chased by similar single pixels don’t really convey a feeling of excitement. However, ‘OOO’ really was a great little time-waster. Your goal was simple: survive. This entailed killing zombies with a handful of weapons, managing ammo and other supplies, flying helicopters, and detonating the odd nuclear warhead. But if you missed this gem, no hard feelings.

Omar's Orthogonal Oyster Outing

Now, you really should have taken a look when we mentioned the sequel, ‘Omar’s Orthogonal Oyster Outing.’ Not only did it keep all of the tense, surprisingly in-depth gameplay from ‘OOO,’ but it added a whole new dimension, namely the third. There was something very neat aesthetically about the simplistic buildings and unusually high number of playgrounds. Also, the addition of stick-figure zombies with business ties was good stuff.

Well, this time I’m not even going to give you the chance to miss another of developer Charon’s ‘Omar’ games. In fact, I’m going to mention it while it’s still just a prototype. Go check out ‘Omar’s Oyster Outing 3D.’ It’s got all of the aesthetic charm of the second game, and I assume that Charon will be adding the gameplay characteristic of the series soon. Be sure to drop by, maybe play the first two again (or for the first time), let him know what you thought was best about both, and just be supportive in general. Or, maybe just chill with the zombies, but be ware: they have a dress code…

Looks lovely. OOOO was pretty fun, even if a little bit bare. If this is just a bit more complex, it can be an amazing game. Either way, you can’t go wrong with zombies.

Pessimistic. OOO had minimal graphics and great gameplay. OOOO had snazzier graphics and unfinished gameplay. OOO 3D has even snazzier graphics and is already running into time/funding problems.

I knew when I saw the title of this post when it showed up in my RSS feed what it would be about. :)
I’ve always preferred Zomband, but this is also a fun game.

Orthogonal was finished…? I wonder how I missed that.

Oh well, once my laptop’s reformatted I’ll be sure to visit Omar in THE THIRD DIMENSION!

  • Ugh. That site. Is going. So. Slow.

I am now downloading (after getting to a text-only version of the page because the normal version refused to do anything) at about 1.2 KB/s. Should be able to see it in an hour or so.

Is it always like this, or could it just be because this project is ridiculously popular?

Seems like a cool game, though the server seem pretty backed up. My guess is that the server has a hard time handling all the visitors from here :)

Maybe you should “warn” ppl that you link them :D indies do often happen to run on low cost servers… and might not be ready for the exposure…

I’m puzzled as to why he’s working on a third game when the first one isn’t even complete yet.

Consider each game a virtual piece of scrap paper.

I guess I owe everyone a brief explanation – OOOO was actually never finished, but it is kind of playable (no save game, no ‘storyline’ buildings). Now I switched to full 3D because I wanted to see the generated city in first person perspective, plus I am a little bit obsessed with ideas of really large game spaces that the players could freely explore… Also in the end I figured OOOO would be just OOO with better graphics, but going 3D’s got to have some pretty tectonic effects on the gameplay itself so it doesn’t make me feel like I’m making the same game all over again… And as for the time/funding problems, those are pretty much a constant therefore nothing to worry about ;P

    Hey Charon! Sounds awesome.

I still pull up OOO every now and then during a lunchbreak, so I’m really looking forward to this new installment in the series :D
