Interview with Rinkuhero of Immortal Defense fame, about Immortal Defense.
I'm kind of interested in who John Thornton is... perhaps, he and Rinku are mating partners!

GDC is goin’ on and Progrium, Alec, and I attended part one of the Independent Games Summit today… but we’ll discuss that once we’ve had a chance to fully recover. For now, I want to introduce to you a new feature that I’ve been cooking up behind the scenes with Postman from Shoot the Core, William Swaney from the2bears, and our very own Tim W. (Independent Gaming):
An Introduction to Doujin Shmups.
Essentially it’s a beginner’s guide to getting into the rather daunting Japanese indie shoot ‘em up scene that we hope will get new players into the genre. Despite the relative simplicity of these types of games, I was surprised by the amount of variation in even a single subcategory of shoot ‘em ups. And it’s definitely a genre that keeps growing, as is evidenced by Clean Asia and, more recently, Guxt.
Hope you enjoy!

Tim is good at writing about games. So good, in fact, that he renders most other attempts at game journalism worthless. Such is his power.
So why not borrow wholesale from his blog! That’s what I always say.
He’s been posting, and will probably continue to post, Top 10 and 20 lists for 2006 that are well thought out, detailed, and expertly organized. But you wouldn’t expect anything less, would you?
The articles feature write ups, screenshots, and download links for all the games and are ordered by awesomeness (or sometimes alphabetically). Check em out here:
Tim’s Top 10 Freeware Platformers of 2006
Tim’s Top 20 Adventure Games of 2006
Tim’s Top 10 Freeware Puzzlers of 2006

Tim’s Blog, duh.)

One of the great features of this site is our comments system. I don’t see any reason to ever go back to having a forum again, really. I like that you guys are all really active and opinionated and funny (when you’re not being dicks).
That said, I’d like to try something out. I’d like to write a nice “Year in Review” for indie gaming. Something that succinctly summarizes all the important events of the year and analyzes the trends. I think it’d be entertaining and valuable for the community to have.
However, there are a few problems with me doing all the work myself. For one thing, I’m lazy. For another thing, no matter how much research I do, I’m going to miss something.
Let’s utilize our comments system and I want to pose the questions to you:
1. “What happened in the indie game community that was important to you this year?”
2. “What were some notable games you played that were released this year?”
3. “What the hell did YOU do this year that was related to indie games?”
Some things that immediately come to mind are XNA, IGF (of course), and Manifesto Games finally going public. XBox Live Arcade was also very prominent this year.
My idea is to get a discussion going and then cull all the wonderful nuggets of joy into a feature. Notable quotes may be used in said feature. I want to talk about it all, from kisses to disses.
So yeah, this is the internet. What do you think? Let’s do this shit and see if it works out.
DISCUSS. (All such posts must end with the word “DISCUSS.”)

There’s a new Download This edition, trumpeting the arrival of Really Rather Good Battles in Space (a space sim), Tasty Planet and Cloud (rather old).
Tasty Planet is an interesting production by the developers of Laser Dolphin. Sort of a 2D Katamari Damacy rip-off – I mean, tribute… but it’s not the first as Grubby Games also released one which made it into the IGF finals.
GameTunnel is publishing a Game of the Year article, though it’s going to be a long wait to find out if your multiplayer game made it into their top five list. Gold Awards can be traded in for christmas socks, I’ve heard (just jesting).
Defcon, fifth? How app. You can grab patch version 1.2 from Introversion’s web site, or sign up for the upcoming Darwinina update test which should include lots of new features.
Also on the plate are fifty other releases to write about, but I’m pretty much in a holiday mood by now…

Well, I’d hate to prove Derek right, and not post anything after my initial burst, so I did an interview with Moonpod about Mr. Robot. (Jeez, those questions are a lot harder to think of when you’re the one asking them.)
