According to Xbox LIVE’s Major Nelson we finally have a release date for Ska Software’s Dishwasher: Dead Samurai. The hyper-stylized action side-scroller echoes modern day 3D action titles such as ‘Ninja Gaiden’ and ‘God of War’, whilst delivering its own distinctive visuals and kickassitude, and will be arriving on the Xbox 360’s XBLA as part of Microsoft’s new ‘Days of the Arcade’ promotion starting March 18th.

Sadly, that’s about all the information specifically that we have. We know the promotion continues for six weeks, and March 18th’s title will be a Hasbro games pack that hopefully no one will care about, so it will definitely arrive sometime between the March 18th and April 29th, and sadly appears to be the sole indie game in the selection this time around. Still it’s at least something, and from what I played from the preview build during the XNA community event it’s perfectly capable of standing on its own. Congratulations Ska Soft!

I still have no damn idea what the name means though…

    High fives for Photoshop->Filters->Texturize->Brick?

    SERIOUS, not-mocking high fives for awesome indie arcade action though! Will it be XBLA exclusive?

  • gsm

    The programmer worked as a dishwasher when he got the idea. I think the protagonist begins as a dishwasher, too. Plus, the wild motion of a mechanical dishwasher running is invoked?

  • The-Imp

    Yeah Adam, XBLA exclusive.

    For now… I’m just glad it’s going to be out soon!

    There was a demo of this available briefly when Microsoft did their Community Games trial week, and it was pretty damn kick-ass. Very pure arcade style, with a good range of weapons and moves.

    My favourite weapons in the demo was the warp-blade (or whatever it was called). Not too fancy in of itself, but it lets you teleport freely, without limitation, by flicking the right stick. Comboing someone one the ground, launching them into the air, teleporting up there with them and continuing the assault in one smooth motion is FUN.

  • falsion

    Hope you can throw dishes and use dishwashing equipment as weapons. That would be nice. I’d buy it.

  • What!?!?!?

    Ska, you know, as in Ska music! Come’on man, get with the times Xander.

    I think he was talking about the dishwasher part…

  • Valter

    Whhaaaaa-

    How could you not be excited for Lode Runner?

  • Nightro

    “High fives for Photoshop->Filters->Texturize->Brick?”

    This is a very old screenshot and was probably placeholder at the time.

  • What!?!?!?

    @Adam Atomic,

    What are you talking about??? The Dishwasher part is about a Dishwasher who’s killed, goes ballistic, and exacts vengeance…

    Get with the times ppl! Sheesh! I thought you guys were “in the know”… damn, can’t even count on indies to have the scoop on other indies (especially in cases like this where the news is 3 years old)… C’mon now!

    Played this a couple years ago at Gamefest. This game is really fun and the “combos” are really satisfying to pull off. Think of it as a much more violent Noitu Love. Can’t wait!

  • BeamSplashX

    Noitu HATE!

    Which spells nothing coherent in reverse, but oh well.

  • sinoth

    @BeamSplashX
    Wait, so does Noitu Love… woah.

  • Shih Tzu

    Aww, I was hoping the color scheme would still be black, white, and red. Maybe with Sin City and MadWorld that’s already overdone, though.

  • Troy RULES

    You know, the music where the guitar goes skaskaskaska and the horns go doot doot toot and the singer goes WHEN IM AT MY DESK THEY COME AT ME WITH A BULLET PROOF VEST AND A GUN SINGING MY MY MY THE DOES DIE

  • Phasma Felis

    Sinoth: You are mistaken.

  • Dan MacDonald

    Sheesh, I can only imagine the bureaucracy that must have ensued trying to get this game out on XBLA considering it won the DBP competition getting close to 2 years ago and it was pretty much complete then.

  • Dan Fan

    @Dan MacDonald,

    Actually, you’re right Dan, and that was brought up (a few times) over the past couple of years. Talk about bullshit. I’m happy for James Silva, I mean I really enjoyed all of his PC games… With the amount of flak, bullshit, and delay that Dishwasher: Dead Samurai has gone through though I’m thinking this should have been made for PC as well. I think the potential audience would have been bigger… I’ve seen comparisons to Noitu Love but they are different games and the PC needs a game like this much more than the XBLA Marketplace does. Microsoft will whore this game out as much as possible, I’m sure, but in the end it really won’t do the game any justice – even though there isn’t anything quite like it yet on XBLA, XBLA is far smaller a venue than the PC would be for this game.

    Has anyone even heard yet if the release date for this (yet unannounced) will be across the board? (meaning, Japan, US, Europe, etc. etc.?) Or are they going to befuggle this title even more by not certifying it for certain regions until it’s play tested by each regions ESRB equivalent group??? We already know, this game is too violent for Australia… (Sorry Ozzy’s… we sympathize with your problems… well, not really – but we’ll drink to you anyway). Anyway, I’d just like to know if there has been word about the release for all regions at the same time. I doubt it, but who knows… May not even hit the foreign marketplace…

    yet more bureaucracy…

    Three cheers for Microsoft… Hip-Hip… awww fuck it.

    Consoles are a natural fit for games like this, because they come with a standard controller.

    Besides, an XBLA release has a good chance of bringing in some decent revenue for the developer (I could be wrong, but I’d imagine it will be a fair bit more than a PC version would net – since I’m developing a PC/XBLA game right now I guess I’ll find out in due course). Yes, the hoops you have to jump through are a pain, and it’s a long process to boot – but if you can get through it all, it has a good chance of paying off.

    I’m really interested in what’s going on in the freeware scene, but I also support indie developers who are trying to make a career of it.

  • Mkatch

    I saw this back when it won the contest, and I’m still privately praying that it gets a PC release. It really does look hella fun, and there are far too few quality games like this for PC.

    @Troy RULES: I saw them live at least twice, I think! :D

    1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4!
