Artcade

A couple weeks ago (right under my nose!), TOJam and Artsy Games Incubator held their first Artcade at Canzine, “Canada’s Largest Zine Fair and Festival of Alternative Culture.” The event featured 20 Toronto indie games, which were housed in mock arcade cabinets (shown at right). There were also various presentations and discussions.
Artsy Games Incubator and TOJam are both Toronto-based indie game collectives. The former was started by Jonathan Mak (Everyday Shooter) and Metanet Software (N).

5 years ago, the idea of videogames at Canzine would have been met with extreme violence. How times have changed! All kinds of people played the games at the Artcade, and much fun was had by all. Most of the credit can be given to those amazing styrofoam arcade cabinets.
Some of the new Incubator creations (demoed at the Artcade) are amazing. While I fear a world where artists can make games (rendering me obsolete), I’m looking forward to their release.
super cool
