  5. torchedEarth said about 3 hours later:

REALLY shit. Save yourself the effort.

…and kid? Drink some liquid so I don’t have to listen to the sticky gack that goes on in your mouth while you speak.

  6. Pixel Mort said about 3 hours later:

Am I the only one to notice the Bonanza Bros influence in that game? (rather than Elevator Action)

  7. haowan said about 3 hours later:

I don’t think so, did you watch the entire vid?

  8. Seol said about 3 hours later:

Nope, but you probably are the only one to miss the Bonanza Bros allusion during the “lack of multiplayer” criticism in the video :P.

  9. Meerman said about 3 hours later:

It’s okay, but it should be called Zero Pronunciation. It starts off too fast so I can understand only half of it, unless I rewind it.

Plus this kind of thing probably sounds better in a UK accent.

  10. Pixel Mort said about 4 hours later:

Actually my english is far from perfect so I didn’t get everything as it’s going really fast. Still the original Zero Punctuation is harder to understand with the british accent and all : /

  11. haowan said about 4 hours later:

I found this harder to understand. Maybe because I’m English, but mostly I think because the parody guy is trying too hard to talk fast whereas Ben just can.

  12. ptoing said about 4 hours later:

Hahaha, so good. The Metal Slug bit cracked me up.

  13. Gr.Viper said about 5 hours later:

    IMHO, Yahtezee speaks MUCH clearer…

  14. Gwyn said about 5 hours later:

No, see, English people invented English. By definition his accent is easier to understand. If you don’t understand it as easily, then your English is poor.

    This is shit btw.

  15. haowan said about 5 hours later:

“By definition his accent is easier to understand.”

    That’s such utter bullshit.

  16. Patrick said about 6 hours later:

Good analysis, but Tribly is much better than this article pretains.

  17. Ted said about 6 hours later:

That was terrible video, a poor imitation of Yahtzee and I hope he returns to video form and rips this guy a new one.

  18. Gwyn said about 6 hours later:

    “That’s such utter bullshit.”

It is when quoted out of context, yeah.

  19. MisterX said about 6 hours later:

Oh come on, don’t just compare this to Zero Punctuation like that, it’s just ment to be a fun parody. I think GSM did a very good job with this, as it actually catches Yahtzee’s style pretty closely, for example in that most of the time the negative aspects are talked about, only to conclude with “well, whatever, still cool!”. It’s actually one of the things I don’t like so much with Yahtzee’s Zero Punctuation, but it’s part of it. Also, yes, he did talk too fast and it was a bit odd how he suddenly spoke so loud. But hey, it’s still only ment to be a neat parody - and it is! (+ in my opinion, before anybody complains)

  20. haowan said about 6 hours later:

No, it’s just utter bullshit. You’re defining English as an accent, when it’s a language. American English is still English, it’s just English an American accent. Your statement should have read:

“No, see, British people speak in a British English accent. If you don’t understand it, then it’s possible that you don’t come from Britain and aren’t used to the accent.”

  21. rinkuhero said about 6 hours later:

Yeah, he’s worse at speaking clearly, but a lot of the content was funny and a lot of the criticisms of the game were spot-on. That check list near the end about what you need to sell a game was funnily true too. I don’t understand the need to always see only the bad parts of something and equate the whole thing with those bad parts.

  22. Monsieur LeBoeuf said about 6 hours later:

Mister The Beef thinks that it was clever. Who didn’t want to make that video? I’m glad it was made. I chortled! Stop burgling turds. I’m looking at you torchedEarth, meerMan, go Ted. Go return the turds to their rightful owners.

I would have cheered louder had there been a zing in there for sticking a dumb “add the numbers” mini-game in front of a level you’re sure to fail at least a dozen times. Or for all those times I couldn’t hide because I was tasing, or vice versa. For which I refuse to take personal responsibility for.

And we zing because we love. I love Trilby-thief game.

    … man hugs?

  23. Lurk said about 6 hours later:

I think the reviewer did not get too far in the game, because he said ‘there is no way to move while wall hugging’, when there’s an option to buy such an ability. Also, I feel that the review is hammering at faults that are very minor (and very common in 2d games), and kind of really asking for a different game altogether- some people actually enjoy trying to determine the right moment to move in a room with cameras+deskman+moving guards.

  24. Mr. Trianglehead said about 7 hours later:

I don’t think this was a stab at Yahtzee at all.

    Cool yo jets people.

I enjoyed it, and could understand it just fine. I liked it for parody’s sake, but not for what he had to say really.

  25. McKack said about 7 hours later:

…I feel that the review is hammering at faults that are very minor…

Well this is exactly what Yahtzee - The British Captain Obvious also does.

  26. Dracko said about 7 hours later:

Why hello, you bunch of racist scumfucks.

It isn’t funny unless sit has an accent, huh? When do we get to see video game reviews by people with black face on and who tap dance?

You people make me want to punt kittens.

  27. Pixel Mort said about 9 hours later:

I was just trying to say that “american english” is easier to understand for me(I’m a french speaking Belgian) because I was raised with american bands, movies, etc…the result of what you could call er…massive cultural exportation from the US? Sorry if I was misunderstood.

  28. haowan said about 9 hours later:

“I don’t think this was a stab at Yahtzee at all.”

Yeah, I think this is all that needs to be said really.

  29. dan said about 9 hours later:

Sorry, this is very very rubbish.

    :(

  30. Yahtzee said about 9 hours later:

    snore.

  31. gnome said about 9 hours later:

Not very rubbish, but definitely sub-standard. Oh, and here’s a tip: trying to be funny with/againt someone that’s actually funny is simply pointless…

  32. dan said about 9 hours later:

“trying to be funny with/againt someone that’s actually funny is simply pointless…”

    Precisely.

  33. Andrew said about 9 hours later:

I disagree, that was as good if not better then Yahtzee’s videos. Very well done.

  34. fish said about 10 hours later:

according to kotaku, that was derek talking in the video.

    and yet its not.

  35. ;' said about 10 hours later:

Not very funny, but Yahtzee is douchebag anyway.

  36. DualZen said about 10 hours later:

Well, as a parody, it’s not half bad. To be fair, it’s not half good either, as the quality of voice recording made it a bit difficult to understand.

Though, what I did understand was pretty funny.

  37. Tertle said about 10 hours later:

But at the end of the day… You don’t rip a neat idea/style off because nobody will like you afterwards.

  38. Gutter said about 10 hours later:

Wow people, get a grip. It is actually nice that someone took to time to tip his hat to Yatzee’s game, seeing as there is no way that he will review his own game. That GSM did it in the style of Yatzee’s reviews is even cooler, they aren’t that easy to imitate.

That some posters here want Yatzee to rip him a new one or whatever is really sad coming from a community that is usually more supportive than that. You might want to look into /b/ or Fark.com if you have any latent trolling to do.

That said, The Art Of Thief wasn’t all that good IMHO. It was a good idea, but weirdly executed, probably because of the media he used less than because of his skills.

(and about the English VS US accents… If you think that either dialects are anything like they were 200-300 years ago, you’d be wrong. The English didn’t “invent” english as we know it from either side of the pond, and both countries as it’s own accent, even mutliple one in each countries.

That doesn’t make the English accent easier to understand, by “definition” or not!)

  39. namuol said about 10 hours later:

    a good laugh

where’s the sense of humor in you guys?

  40. Alec said about 10 hours later:

Its funny that a bunch of websites think that Derek made this. Derek’s voice is like 69 times more sexy.

  41. Skyleak said about 11 hours later:

I found it quite clever and humorous. Another thing is saying somebody has a English accent is quite vague as in England there’s a different accent every 15 miles from where you just were. There is however English slang that can be somewhat hard to interpret but after thinking about the saying for longer than 5 seconds you can usually associate it with what it actually means. Unfortunately 5 seconds later is about 30 words later.

Enough rambling though as I said previously I found it quite clever and I would have a good laugh at this. Kind of odd to see so many sour comments here though. I believe imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, too bad most of you think imitation is an art of theft.

  42. Mike said about 11 hours later:

This was actually made by GSM at the Penny-Arcade forums, if anyone was wondering. Although, given the responses, it seems more fun to drag other people through the mud, at least according to Kotaku.

  43. McKack said about 11 hours later:

Do not confuse accent with dialect.

  44. wormguy said about 12 hours later:

In this thread we see how some people completely miss the point of parody.

He wasn’t actually ripping on Yahtzee. It was more like a tribute.

It made me chuckle, that’s good enough for me. Stop taking everything so seriously.

  45. Phasma Felis said about 12 hours later:

Geez, you guys. They have this thing called a “sense of humor” now, you should check it out. I think you can pick one up at Wal-Mart maybe.

All in all, a pretty good homage/parody. (Homody? Parage?) Not as funny as Yahtzee himself, of course, but who is? A solid effort, and I’m sure Yahtzee is amused.

  46. Vydas said about 12 hours later:

It was well done, and at least in terms of structure, nailed Yahtzee’s formula precisely.

I found it rather overly nice though to the game, he could have ripped it to shreds much more so than he did, but this was a loving parody and not a vicious attack, which the highly derivative Art of Theft is open to.

  47. Randomguy said about 12 hours later:

    OK, flaming time.

YOU GUYS THAT DON’T UNDERSTAND THIS NEED TO SHUT THE FUCK UP!

    There.

  48. Sciere said about 12 hours later:

Pixel Mort, as a fellow Belgian, I was raised on shit too until I finally discovered the internet. Not too late to change your ways. Lovely parody this, by the way.

  49. Pyrrhon said about 12 hours later:

    Zero Punctuation is the shit.

    Some Punctuation is just shit.

  50. BenH said about 13 hours later:

Have you heard the voice in Aquaria? That’s Derek :D

  51. moi said about 15 hours later:

    DON’T TASE ME BRO!

OOOPS FORGOT TO PUT ON ENGLISH ACCENT

    DOINT TAISE ME BRAU!

  52. GSM said about 15 hours later:

Hey, Derek! Do you remember the Click Comedy Commentary where I compared Chaos Gate and Eternal Daughter? That was also me!

  53. NPSCT said about 15 hours later:

    DOINT TAISE ME BRAU!

Oh how witty! The secret of gay English humor is revealed! It’s all about accent!

  54. Shinji16 said about 15 hours later:

Wow… I did not imagine this entry on TIGSource turning into such a bitch fest. Time to jump in then…

If you’re having problems understanding him, have your hearing checked. He’s not that fast. Then again I drink Bawlz to calm me down before I go to bed (seriously).

Also, I think it’s a good parody. He’s done this in his spare time, mainly for fun, and it has a lot of effort behind it. It’s not perfect, but then again what is?

What I think is horrible is the fact that people here are commenting one word responses like “shit” thinking that is a valid response. If you’re going to take the effort to click ‘submit’ at least make it constructive.

  55. Gr.Viper said about 16 hours later:

The other difference between SP and ZP, apart from the language, is that Yahtzee generally tries to complete the game or at least let viewers know, where he got bored enough to abandon it completely. But here we can figure out that it’s been first couple of levels, one new skill etc. Yeah, the parody is mostly aimed at style but… the author missed the bloody Z/X smashing mini-game which could be developed into a perfect Yahtzee-style nostalgic footnote

  56. Jad said about 16 hours later:

The difference is that where Zero Punctation is a series of witty reviews, Some Punctation is a one-shot parody of Zero Punctation made with no other intent than creating some lulz. And the bashing people obviously didn’t get shit :D

  57. eobet said about 16 hours later:

Absolutely wonderful. I didn’t get this Trilby game at all (from a gameplay perspective).

  58. pkt-zer0 said about 17 hours later:

the author missed the bloody Z/X smashing mini-game which could be developed into a perfect Yahtzee-style nostalgic footnote

    What.

  59. Lim-Dul said about 18 hours later:

C’mon guys - I love Zero Punctuation but this spoof is really good - appreciate it for what it is - a spoof. The author obviously likes ZP as well since otherwise he wouldn’t bother to make a parody so truthful to the original.

Have you spotted the “parodiusly” and “unwitingly”. Spellcheck for the win! :-D

Yahtzee used misspelled words for comic effect but never in the intro or outro. =)

  60. Angelstein said about 19 hours later:

WTF is HE saying?! It’s just one l-o-n-g five minute slurfest. I can’t really say if it was funny or not, seeing as I barely understood a word he was saying. It done my head in though.

Re-do it for Christ’s sake! It’s no good if you sound like a slobbering drunk on speed.

Yahtzee never skips a syllable. He speaks way faster but still manages to be word perfect.

10 outa 10 for effort, but 1 outa 10 for execution mate.

  61. risujin said about 19 hours later:

He could talk a bit clearer, but it’s priceless to see Yahtzee’s own game reviewed Zero Punctuation style!

    Awesome. :D

  62. King-N said about 21 hours later:

    Well done, I enjoyed it.

  63. Sko said about 22 hours later:

What are you people talking about? The voice might’ve been a bit sloppy at the beginning, but otherwise this is a great parody. It captured Yahtzee’s style perfectly.. sans the accent.

  64. a russian said about 23 hours later:

Hmm, i see, so Derek is a fucking numbnut. Not that its news to anyone who talked to the guy.

I mean I think I read that right? I dunno. I usually get confused trying to read things.

Like this one time my mom told me to get a платок from the corner store and instead I brought the corner store to the платок! WTF?

Maybe one of these days I’ll figure it out. Until then, wish me luck! I think I need it… :\

  65. Neon said about 23 hours later:

I didn’t really enjoy Trilby so this was pretty good. Not to mention the pretty spot on impression of yahtzee’s reviews.

  66. HIVmaster AIDS said 1 day later:

A cute parody but would have been better tackled by someone who:

    a. can talk fast and (and this is the important part) clearly. b. can construct a joke c. doesn’t have the voice of stereotypical nerds in 80’s sitcoms

Man, I love AIDS. Anyone want to make out with me to get it? :)

  67. Raffles said 1 day later:

While the real Zero Punctuation videos had a fast narration, this one tries so hard to speak quickly like that it irritates me beyond being able to focus on what you are saying. Also, it’s not funny.

  68. Raffles said 1 day later:

Oh by the way, was that Fat Rab at the end there? He’d be rolling in his Fray Bentos to see this. TEEEEEEEEEAM

  69. Pashons said 1 day later:

As if anyone needed any more proof that Derek really is a fucking dumbnut, but he just keeps throwing it at us.

Wait was I supposed to say numbnut?

Cause clearly the only person that works on this site is Derek right?

Man, I hate Derek. I hate Derek so much. That’s what makes me so lovable.

  70. Skyleak said 1 day later:

Ugh Oh! KOTAKU strike force assemble!!

  71. Radix said 1 day later:

A minute or so of slurred speech and swallowed phonemes in I stopped it. I could understand what he was saying, but nothing is funny when you have to struggle to understand some fucker that doesn’t open his mouth to speak.

  72. Zaph said 1 day later:

I thought it was pretty good. It emulates the Yahtzee-style fairly well. Not especially hilarious though.

  73. Xander said 1 day later:

I thought it was pretty well done aswell. Ultimately it’s a parody, and never intended to COMPLETELY emulate Yahtzee’s style, basically because if everyone could do it then it wouldn’t be special. It was a nice effort at least and a decent idea.

  74. ZombiePixel said 1 day later:

Pretty good parody that could have used some more practice on the narration. The animation is spot on, in fact a bit better than Zero Punctuation’s. Not LOL material so much as “Hmmm, that’s amusing”.

  75. Garo said 1 day later:

    A parody of a parody… how creative :/

  76. God said 1 day later:

  78. Adam Atomic said 1 day later:

I’m assuming the vast majority of the dumpers and trolls are from Kotaku or something, because this does NOT strike me as a classic Tigersauce response to somebody’s creative efforts.

Tigersauce is not for whiny pussies who post pissy comments and take dumps on people who actually bothered to CREATE something. All you 13 year olds and 22 year olds with 13 year old social skills can go right on back to your other games blogs and rant about which console is the b3st. No need to pollute the tigersauce with your own special brand of Mentally Fucking Retarded.

GSM, congrats on a well-made parody that made me smile!

  79. Derek said 1 day later:

You know what they say… “those who can’t create, critique.”

And yes, a quick ip check shows us that most of these whiny pussies are new posters! :D

  80. BMcC said 1 day later:

Wow. These Kotaku readers come off as fairly retarded, don’t they?

    I’m disappointed, but not surprised.

  81. Si said 1 day later:

Derek, but in order to create you need to critique your own work and others in order to learn from their mistakes and progress.

  82. Gr.Viper said 1 day later:

    What’s this “Ko-ta-ku” thing?

  83. Derek said 1 day later:

Si: “If I can’t create then I must critique” does not imply that “if I can create then I must not critique.” ;)

  84. Si said 1 day later:

    Fair dooooos

  85. MK said 1 day later:

some dude said if your English his accent is easier to understand, incase some Americans call themselves English then his statement is true.

because the dude has an English accent, and is speaking in English, me being English English, means it was easier for me to understand.

if I were American English then I suppose it wouldn’t of been that easy, but Americans dont understand a lot of things.

I thought it was good, not LMAO funny but it has its Lolz. why dont you guys try to criticise Yahtzee, its near impossible :P

  88. IndieJoJo said 1 day later:

    Si,

Constructive criticism is fine. I don’t see you bashing the guy. I was referring to torchedEarth, Pyrrhon, the poser posting as ‘Yahtzee’, Ted, et al.

Some other people on here are being a bit harsh, but at least they’re offering some feedback on some level or another.

  89. Ilia Chentsov said 2 days later:

So, some of you think that Kotaku readers and indie game developers (aka indie game site readers) are two altogether different groups?

  90. Radix said 2 days later:

Constructive nothing; this isn’t his blog, this is a whatever this is. We’re commenting on the news item.

  95. to err is human said 3 days later:

    This would be really funny!

IF… there was actually some humor inserted in various areas of the “review”. Maybe the vid maker should have taken hints from the original.

Strange as well that sometimes he speaks quick and sometimes slow… Ultra annoying stereo typical white voice, has to be added. A pain to watch and an even bigger pain to listen to.

No idea why this was made. Could have been good if it was a parody on Yahtzee’s reviews… but for it to be a parody it’d have to be funny or contain some humor. Which it doesn’t. As it stands it just looks like a pointless Yahtzee rip-off which is a chore to watch.

I take it this is some dude who had his favorite game (Halo 3 maybe?) bashed by Yahtzee?

  96. Skyleak said 3 days later:

Good god… I’ve been planning this for the last few nights, ever since I played Trilby. I was going to call it Endless Clause. This is almost certainly better, though I am English, but damn.

Anyway, Yahtzee’s basically asking for it with this game. When there’s a game with a fantastic premise and main mechanic, let down by some horrifically obvious bugs, it’s usually a shame. But when it comes from an ego the size of Croshaw’s, it’s pure delicious.

  108. Bob said 5 days later:
