'Night Game' -- Potential New Project From Nifflas

WaDF making shadows on the wall. With physics!

Whoa! Shih Tzu was just telling me today about the great Knytt Stories expansions out there, and look what I find on Tim’s blog just now… Concept art for Nifflas’ new project, tentatively called “Night Game.” Could this be a spiritual successor to Within a Deep Forest?

Little is known at this point, but mysterious user “pi” on Tim’s site has pointed out a forum thread on Clickteam’s site where Nifflas seems mighty interested in physics solutions. He even posted some diagrams that bear a striking resemblance to the image above.

It’s quite cool seeing Nifflas explore new graphical and gameplay styles like this. Keep an eye on this one.

Nifflas’ forum post:

I want to create a game that takes place in a 2D landscape. The background scenery will contain slopes, but it does not have to be curved like in the demonstration images.

Except for the static terrain, I am only interested in two shapes. Rectangles and Spheres. The player character will be a ball that can be rolled with the left and right arrow keys. Boxes and rectangles collide realistically with the ball, and can be pushed and tipped.

There must be a way to attach several rectangles and spheres to each other, to create more complex objects (four rectangles can become a windmill). There must also be a way to attach a physical object to the background, so it’s X and Y position becomes fixed, but it still begins to rotate realistically if you push it somewhere.

    OMG KNYTT 3

  2. Shih Tzu said about 2 hours later:

    It must be NotNotKnytt.

  3. retroo said about 2 hours later:

indeed, with WaDF balls as knytts, thar better be a level editar!

  4. Lim-Dul said about 3 hours later:

Well, Knytt Stories already has a level editor so I see no reason why Nifflas should abandon this concept in future games.

Especially since the editor is keeping the game alive.

  5. BMcC said about 3 hours later:

Let the feature creep begin! :P

(I dunno, I don’t think it should necessarily have a level editor. It looks like he has enough on his hands already.)

  6. Safton said about 4 hours later:

…New style please… and the black is just a lazy excuse not to make decent graphics, if I made all my graphics black I could make a massive game too.

  7. Stwelin said about 5 hours later:

@Safton: Agree. Unless he has something cunning up his sleeve that will give some liveliness to the atmosphere, (ie. frame by frame animated silhouettes.) There is a need for contrast. Half the time you’d lose track of where the character is.

  8. PHeMoX said about 5 hours later:

I think it’s just really really dark uhm blue…

  9. blah said about 6 hours later:

black graphics would be a challenge. assuming the game is huge, how would you make all the different parts distinct from one another?? it should be seen this way. knytt and wadf have colours aplenty.

  10. blah said about 7 hours later:

well, not “should be” seen that way. just an alternate view to consider.

  11. BMcC said about 8 hours later:

    Safton: Prove it. :)

  12. Joseph said about 10 hours later:

Actually working with a limited color pallet is even more difficult than working with a full range of colors. It really has to be perfect or else it just looks like crap. Anyways looking forward to whatever Nifflas has cooking up!

  13. Julian said about 10 hours later:

    Sounds/looks like Gish!

  14. Blueberry_pie said about 13 hours later:

I was actually the ‘mysterious user “pi”’ who posted that. Ooh, I’m famous!

  15. Doki said about 13 hours later:

More doki!!! doki doki doki! lol

  16. Lim-Dul said about 15 hours later:

Oh, leave Nifflas alone - he has his own, recognizable style. I trust his skills to design a good game since I liked all his creations and each one had a pretty different feel to them.

The wonderful thing about indie gaming is that the designer isn’t limited by anything but his own imagination - let him do his job and THEN we can judge the final product.

  17. BMcC said about 17 hours later:

Blueberry_pie: Hehe, cool. It was a good find!

Joseph, Lim-Dul: I agree with you guys.

  18. Tr00jg said about 18 hours later:

    woot! This looks pretty sweet.

  19. PHeMoX said about 21 hours later:

    Sounds/looks like Gish!

    Yeah, but I can’t say that’s a particularly bad thing. ^^

  20. Julian said about 24 hours later:

No no. Of course, it is not a bad thing. It’s goood. I hope it will be as good as the other Nifflas games! :)

  21. Tablette said 1 day later:

Umm, I agree there a bit with Lim-Dul. I don’t know, if the indy-designerist will be still motivated in brainstorming his game, when the whole internet tries to deconstruct each of his forum posts anywhere.

  22. PHeMoX said 1 day later:

The color ‘complaint’ was punny anyway, because who would call a concept ‘Night Game’ when it’s going to be all shiny and colorful and have Mario-like color schemes?? :p

  23. BeamSplashX said 1 day later:

    Blind people.

  24. Fish said 5 days later:

    Seems interesting.

  25. Joe Joe said 5 days later:

I think we should all make final judgments about this game, Nifflas, and Nifflas’ ideas, based only on this single screen shot!

    Who’s with me?
