Dwarf Fortress

“My legendary clothesmaker just threw a tantrum because his masterwork giant cave spider silk pants were stolen by invisible goblins. Which I guess I can understand, they probably were really nice pants. The thing I don’t understand is why he decided to mangle the limbs of one of my legendary craftdwarves and break the legs of my legendary carpenter.” -bloodyfool, Dwarf Fortress player, from the forums

I need to stop talking about this game, because it’s annoying my friends and keeping me from my work. It’s a Roguelike that let’s you build and run a… well, dwarf fortress. (I love saying “dwarf fortress.”) There’s so much detail in this game that it’s almost too complex to play. I just like revelling in the possibilities.

EDIT: Also, here’s a link to a beginner’s guide (Penny Arcade forums) and the Dwarf Fortress wiki. The game’s hard to get into without either.

Oh man, I don’t have time for this. I’ve got work to do, man!

But instead I’m going to sit here and wait for an ASCII world to generate.

    Thanks a lot!

  2. NHP said about 5 hours later:

looks like you couldn’t be bothered with writing a description. well, we couldn’t be bothered with trying it out either.

  3. NO! said about 7 hours later:

True, asshole! This is way too retro for me… Retro as in CRAPPY. Use some fucking bitmaps, you, nostaligc geek!, that looks unappealing…

  4. BMcC said about 7 hours later:

Aaaannnd this concludes our lesson on philistinism.

  5. scissors said about 8 hours later:

This is really one of those games where everything about it is wonderful except for the actual gameplay.

  6. Jey said about 8 hours later:

    it’s just like programming. boring.

Derek’s lost it. He’s just posting random stuff.

  7. null said about 9 hours later:

I, for one, am glad to have moved beyond virtualhottie.

  8. Derek said about 14 hours later:

Dude, I lost it years ago.

  9. Geoff said about 16 hours later:

Ok, this game has me hooked…damn you…

  10. The Trav said about 20 hours later:

This game is made of pure win.

If you can’t be assed waiting for the world to generate download a pre-generated one.

You should really have mentioned the adventure mode and the persistant game world.

And to the fool who was complaining about graphics, they are using bitmaps, and you are a fool

I’ve been hooked on this thing for weeks. Rather excellent, and it just keeps getting better with the newest patches.

New players should check out the DF wiki, particularly the section on surviving your first winter, in order to learn how to play effectively.

Expect to lose many, many times.

Oh, piss flaps. Thanks a bunch Derek. I’m already unemployed. How am I supposed to get a job now?

  13. failrate said 1 day later:

Is there a way I can import other people’s Dwarven Fortresses into Angband, so my “hero” can loot them?

  14. Derek said 1 day later:

    What’s a “piss flap?” I think I need one.

  15. Potsticker said 2 days later:

Wow. I almost took some PTO at work today just so I could continue playing. Damn, and it looks like a goon did a one dwarf run to the end. Hot.

  16. Advenith said 4 days later:

You just had to post it. You had to say, “Here’s a roguelike! Play it now!” Nethack already sucks up too much time. Now I’ll never leave the computer monitor; my eyes glued to the screen as they turn into jelly.

    So, yeah, the game rocks.

I cannot find any information on bitmaps. source of this information?

Btw, i’m still working on nethack…i don’t think starting ANOTHER roguelike will help me in either game. but I’ll store it in my computer for play some other decade.

Sorry, I was being misleading and a bit of a prat. The font is kept in a single bitmap which is sliced up for tiles.

Apparantly you can’t use it for tile graphics though as the same character will be used multiple times for completely different representations.

I reckon they’ll update that eventually, but there’s far more important things to do first.

  19. Ginseng said 4 months later:

Best game ever created. Took 5 years to make and its still not done.

  20. Krige said 6 months later:

I just want to say that this is truly one of the greatest games.

    back to his fortress
