Qwak

Qwak is a pretty cool little homebrew platformer for the GBA, developed by Jamie Woodhouse. The first thing I noticed when I played the demo (requires a GBA emulator) is that the game is pretty fast-paced. The second thing I noticed is that you’re a duck who wears armor and throws its own eggs to kill furries. The third thing I noticed is that I was having a pretty good time.

Bottom line: 15 GBP for a fun platformer for your GBA (comes in an actual cartridge).

EDIT: Yes, this is a remake of the Amiga game from 1993.

update: got the game in the mail today, and it works flawlessly on my DS (I’ve never tried any unofficial carts before, so I was not completely sure what to expect). First impressions are definitely good, with the game being just as enjoyable as I remember from the Amiga days.

lol, I pirated this back in the day… funny how we sometimes get second chances (after almost 15 years I’ve finally done the right thing and paid for the game :-)

Yeah same programmer:

from the site: “Qwak for the Amiga and CD32 computers. I was the sole designer and programmer. I was also responsible for some artwork in the game. I developed the game to 70% completion before signing up with Team17. Qwak received top reviews and was highly regarded for it’s addictive game-play.”

My god! I was trying to remember the name of this forever! It was such a hard game but so much fun, the way games are meant to be! I’m going to dig out my amiga and play it now.

I presume the guy is publishing the game himself by putting on blank cartridges (he said there are only 300 copies), but that makes me wonder if Nintendo would try and do anything about it if they caught wind of it? Nintendo seem to enjoy jumping onto legal stuff like this, no matter how big or small it is, and last I heard you needed a pretty expensive license to legally make and (more importantly) sell games on their system..

Anybody know how he’s done it?

It is the same game, and it’s the same programmer as the Amiga one, I believe.

I’ve got it already and it’s very difficult, but fun. Super-old-school!

I wonder why the site doesn’t mention that this is a remake of the Amiga game from 1993? Oh well, if it’s the same then it’s average, and if not, it’s not.
