Sometimes it’s hard being European. There’s Japan to the East, obscured in a haze of gigantic robots, explosions and awesome flu mask fashion accessories. To the west lie the expanses of America, presided over by the regal Derek Yu and guarded always by the mighty fists of David Whitlark. What do we have to show for ourselves? Countless failed empires, some french guy riding a bicycle with a baguette under his arm, and questionable musical adventures like Eurodance.

Well, Europe, your fortunes are about to change. It’s time to stand up and be counted. We give you…

This summer, from Friday, July 31st to Monday, August 3rd, an indie game jam will be taking place in the lovely city of Berlin, Germany. Cunningly titled the Berlin Indie Game Jam, it offers the opportunity to meet a bunch of awesome, like-minded people and work together with them on some cool games, as well as participate in a smattering of events such as 3-hour game development competitions.

We’ll be kicking back on the second floor of the lovely St. Oberholz café. The café not only guarantees a smooth atmosphere to jam and work in, but also offers an assortment of beverages and tasty foodstuffs to help you ward off death by starvation or thirst.

I’d love to attend, but three things prevent me from doing so. First off, I’m not an indie game-maker at all. I’m a fan of indie games, love indie games and support indie games, but make them I do not. My second issue links in to my third. I’m only 16, so as if that wasn’t a problem enough, travelling from England to Berlin would be virtually impossible.

Still, if something like this happens again in the future I’ll make it so that I’m definitely able to attend.

I will personally award a prize of one (1) muffin or comparable sponge-based comestible to whoever makes the most horrifically violent game, unless it’s really shitty or racially insensitive or something.

Oh, and I know, Europe is actually pretty awesome. Loads of awesome indies herein lurk, and I guess there are all of those historical achievements… you know, science, art, modern civilisation and all that stuff nobody really cares about. Still, I was working on the principle of “treat em mean, keep em keen”.

Questionable music preferences? Seriously, pop music in the U.S. is downright evil. Only a small majority of current music over here is at least passable(the melody is the crucial part of music, and we mostly fail). You guys have the guys who created Elite, Peter Molyneux, and Edge magazine! Oh, and mentioning the East: you forgot ZUN.

@Rob we hold jams in central Iowa. if you’re into it we’re planning one for July sometime. Our last one was a lot of fun and pretty successful in terms of finishing a few games.
