WARMACHINE OVERLOAD

WARMACHINE OVERLOAD is a manic shoot ‘em up from Dark Hell Company, which wins the prize for having the most intimidating company name ever. The game is based off of the old Konami shmup Thunder Cross (video), where you can earn up to four options that can then be arranged into preset formations during the game.

On top of that, you can slow down the game by pressing Shift (something you’ll be doing a lot of), and also charge up a beam that does big damage and cancels enemy shots (‘X’). Press ‘Z’ to shoot, and ‘C’ to change your option formation. Spacebar will take you back to the title screen (something I did quite a few times on accident).

I don’t know enough about the genre to be able to compare WARMACHINE OVERLOAD to other manic shoot ‘em ups, but I enjoyed it. The gritty pixel graphics are verra nice, and I like the various options offered by the game (option formation editor, stage select, replay feature, and multiple difficulty levels). Definitely take a look at it, and DHC’s other games.

Note: For help downloading from Vector, read this guide I wrote.

(Thanks, Javet! Check out his freeware thread on TIGForums where he’s serving up new games every day.)

I REALLY like this. I’m a big fan of “manic shoot ‘em ups” or “Bullet hell shoot ‘em up” and the weapon/option customization is really fun. It’s just too bad the game doesn’t save your setups when you quit the game, and I have to build them again when the next time I play.

Also, the scale isn’t quite what it seems on the small customization window. It shows that the options are right next to each other, but in-game there is a big space between them.

It’s quite easy to navigate Vector or similar sites looking at status bar. They use abbreviations like “dl” for downloads in url-s there.

Actually, more often than not the underlying site often is in English, so you will see things like “/download.html” or so in the status bar when hovering about links or buttons. Often links just go directly to files themselves.

So yeah, definitely the most important place to watch is the status bar! :)

This game seems to run some kind of conflict with my XBCD xbox controller. The analog stick only moves in four directions. :(

I was still able to make it most-ways through the game. Absolutely love the gun ship customization WoW

I managed to download the game using a different “technique”. It seems that downloading from Vector is a mini-game all by itself. :-D

I clicked on the big grey button until a blue button appeared. Then I clicked the blue one and the download started immediately. Kinda like your method, Derek, but I simply used grey, grey, blue instead of using the tabs at the top.

By the way - I figured out that there’s an even simpler way. Click on the RIGHTMOST tab at the top and then on the blue button. Only two steps involved! A winner is me!

Hey, Smithy! Thanks for reminding me… I was planning on writing a little guide to help people navigate Vector.

Here ‘tis:

http://tigsource.com/pages/vector

A fine game, but I think Sonic Ironstorm: Fatal Attack is their best.

http://www.interq.or.jp/saturn/takuhama/Shooting8.html

The trick to navigating vector is to keep clicking the link with the blue bar graphic behind it (that looks like a DL link). If you hit a page with a picture of a cat reading a newspaper, hit back and click the same link again. This time it’ll work!

You are on the warmachine homepage. Strange hieroglyphics adorn the site.

As you scan all the links you come to the shocking conclusion that you don’t actually know how to read japanese.

Click top link

You come to yet another site, this one more mysterious than the last. There are many links.

Backspace

You move back to the first site.

Click second link

This brings you to a website with a picture of some sort of cat! Possibly a tiger. He appears to be reading a newspaper and wearing farmers garments.
