Season Two of Telltale Games’s Sam n’ Max started last week, with the first episode, “Ice Station Santa,” made available on Gametap and the Telltale website.

If you haven’t tried it out yet and you’re wondering whether it’s good – yes, what I’ve played so far is good! I was a huge fan of the original game, and these games seem like a true enough follow-up to that classic. Definitely take it for a test drive, at least. The fourth episode of Season One, “Abe Lincoln Must Die,” is now free, and you can get it here.

Steve Purcell, the creator of Sam n’ Max, also has an S&M (snicker) webcomic on the Telltale site, and the darn thing was nominated for an Eisner award this year.

I’m all over Sam n’ Max like stripes on a candy cane.

It seems not bad if you play one episode of a season. One. Playing them all is like listening to the same vinyl record but with different scratches. Same chase, same two-three locations pattern, same shapshifters Bosco and Sybil, same comments to decorative objects. And no tigersauce at all.

You know, when they start joking about how they already used every joke in the book… it’s not postmodern, it’s pathetic.
(Talking about “Abe Lincoln…”, though they all look the same to me).

(Hehe, nice mistake - “Lincolon”).

The benefit of 3D is that it’s far cheaper than 2D.

Would have been nice to see them go with some sort of NPR technique to make it look more like the comic though.

Max (After learning that the world will probably end in coming decades): Wow! It’s a good thing my life span is only four years!

Sam: Way to look at the bright side, little buddy.

Best script ever.

I only played the original game. Never tried the newfangled series. I just bought season one. I hope it can live up to my expectations.

I think one big problem with 3D is that there are VERY few good animators, and still the “good” 3D animation isn’t as good as conventional 2D animation has ever been.

And I agree on the voice acting, one problem is that there are many gaps between dialogue speaker switches - at least they were in the episode that I played a few weeks ago…

So I downloaded and tried the game but I have to say that I can’t really chum up with it. I can’t really put the finger on it, but there’s something about the voice acting that I dislike.

Also I still don’t see the benefit of making 2D comic figures into 3D models. The transformation just never really works and the characters lose a lot of charm.

Alltogether I can’t really make up my mind about this, on the one hand I think it’s great that Sam’n’Max is back and on the other some changes make me a bit sour… but maybe I’m just an old-fashioned traditionalist…

Why must it be in 3D… :(

The comics are perfectly drawn 2D, the original game was 2D, the cartoon TV show was 2D, the new game’s basically a 2D point’n’click thing, so WHY, for god’s sake, must they do EVERYTHING in 3D nowadays, when it would in fact look ten times better if it was in 2D?

Another example is the Spongebob adventure. It’s a 2D show! So why do I have to look at these ugly 3D meshes?!

Oh hay Zeno. I think I know you from some other forums.

Anyway, I can’t say I’ve tried any of the classic S&M (snicker snicker) games, but this looks pretty promising, so I’ll give it a shot. The comic is pretty good, too.

Downloading “Abe Lincoln Must Die” as of now. I’ll play it as soon as I’m done with this research paper… (I’ve been neglecting Dwarf Fortress as well. She’s a demanding, clingy bitch and I never get any work done when shes around, but I just can’t stay mad at her)

Lincoln Must Die is still up, and still free. Its freeness isn’t a limited time thing, either… it should hopefully just sort of remain free for a long time. www.telltalegames.com/samandmax/lincolnmustdie

Hmm, they seemed to have taken down episode 4, at least when I load the page it’s not there…
The original is still one of my favorite adventure games, as well as the comics. I loved the parody of Star Wars one…
