Mad Energy

Here’s a rather obscure find! Look at the website, for Kenta’s sake. (Thanks a bunch, ags!)

Mad Energy is a top-down action game where the object is to get to the exit of each level (a glowing blue circle). This is made difficult by the usual complement of nasties, which include soldiers, automated turrets, and an assortment of weird beasties. The game is controlled entirely with the mouse (right-click to move).

Thankfully, you’ve got some mad energy on hand (although I like to think of it as that thing from the movie Krull). When you shoot it, it ricochets off walls, killing anything in its path. Left-click once to fire it, click again to stop it, and click once more to have it come back to you. You can collect power-ups to speed it up, or to give you “BOM,” which makes your mad energy explode when you stop it. BOMs can be carried from level to level.

Unfortunately, the energy is tied to your lifebar, so you can die if you have it out too long. On the flipside, taking damage from enemies means it becomes more dangerous to “shoot your mad energy,” as the kids say.

Short, but sweet. Mad sweet.

You certainly did a better job at explaining the game than I did, Derek. I’m glad others are enjoying it too.

Using The Internet Wayback Machine, it’s possible to retrieve at least one other game made by Gensai. Unfortunately, it’s not nearly as well-made or interesting. Mad Energy seems to be the game he was most proud of, and rightly so.

Well, I got past level 4. Stuck on 6 now.

This game is a lot more methodical then most action games, you actually have to plan out and aim your shots. Does anyone know how many levels there are?

MANG DIS ENERGY BE MAAAAD

Fun game, but moving the character with your mouse seems awkward. I wish they would’ve used WASD…

Pretty fun game. It’s great how a game this simple with basically only a single interesting, still also simple gameplay mechanic can be addictive and fun, if just that works well. Very nice :)
I just made it to the 5th level or something, because these “turrets” seemed a little frustrating, but I bet I’ll go on playing later :D

While we’re at simple yet addictive and fun games, have you heard of Portal - The Flash Version? It is not an original or really creative game as the creator basically just copies the whole idea of Portal (included in “The Orange Box” alongside Half-Life 2 Episode 2) and makes it into a 2D Flash game, but hell, it’s still a lot of fun with only a few frustrating levels.
Probably also nice for a “discussion” on this site, as usually people need help from others like “How the hell am I supposed to beat level XY?!”.
May well be worth mentioning, check it out: http://www.armorgames.com/games/portaltheflashversion_game.html
