A New Interview

Posted by Tim Tue, 07 Nov 2006 19:01:00 GMT

AquariaWe can’t talk about politics. Can’t talk about shmups either. No swearing. Can’t bash DEFCON or Blast Miner. Or GT. Bad mouthing FPS is not allowed.

So what are we supposed to discuss then? Damn, posting on TIGSource is practically an adventure in a mine field, considering the censorship request from all parties.

Even Aquaria is off limits. Well, too bad. Here’s an interview with two blokes who gave birth to Aquaria.

Note to the single anonymous poster/spambot. You don’t like hearing about it, fine. Cover your ears with your hands or something. This is still the same old TIGSource, and people want to read about independent gaming news.

You’ll probably notice two things from the article.

- Aquaria will have Xbox 360 controller and keyboard support, and
- Derek did not emerge from the egg of a phoenix.

Dexterity Is Dead

Posted by Brandon "BMcC" McCartin Tue, 07 Nov 2006 18:28:00 GMT

No more!

I just noticed this, but Dexterity Software (Dweep, Dweep Gold, etc.) shut down a week ago after twelve lucrative years in the indie games business.

Sure, the site’s been essentially inactive for a long while now while its well-known and outspoken creator Steve Pavlina focused on his personal development/self help career (big money, apparently), but still… Why decide to kill the entire site—game downloads, insightful articles, and all?

Oh well. To Steve’s continued success, I say! He’ll always be an inspiration, game programmer or no.

Now back to your regularly scheduled flame war.

Lugaru 2

Posted by Lorne Whiting Tue, 07 Nov 2006 17:43:00 GMT

Name’s Lorne, I’m a new editor. Fear my wrath! Of hell! Well, not hell… Just wrath.

StartingFur2

Pardon me if this was posted about before (Or I screwed up the categories, since I don’t get that AT ALL). My favorite indie game EVER is getting a sequel. That would be Lugaru... 2. 2 is the sequel, I’m not talking Lugaru 3, here. That would be, well, totally awesome, but no.

If you haven’t played the first, click the link above and download the demo, this moment (Or read the description first).

Lynn's Legacy

Posted by Shabadage Sat, 04 Nov 2006 12:29:00 GMT

Lynn's Legacy ScreenshotWell, to make up for my RE-posting of an old news item (BAD SHAB!), I’ve decided to share another game in the same “Zelda-ish” style, so NYAH!

Errm, anyway, the game in question is titled Lynn’s Legacy; and as previously stated it’s a Zelda Like game. You play as the mercenary Lynn (who has somewhat of a bad attitude for such a cutish game) who is on a quest to figure who tried to kill her and why. Yes, pretty standard fare stuff, but that doesn’t detract from the fun.

Also notice that there IS a linux version. (For all two of you who run games natively in linux.)

Guardian of Paradise (Repost)

Posted by Shabadage Sat, 04 Nov 2006 08:47:00 GMT

GoPI’m sure some of you have heard of Akuji the Demon (Careful, the site’s in japanese, but you can always run it through Babelfish, failing that, it’s the second link on the Games page), a fun freeware effort from Japanese freeware maker Buster. (I’d provide a link to the english translation patch, but Do-jin Nyuu! is down right now).

Well, it seems that another one of Buster’s games has been translated, this one being Guardian of Paradise a little adventure game that more than just kinda resembles A Link to the Past. I’ve sunk about an hour into the game, and I’m having quite a bit of fun with it, so why don’t you hit that link above; and check it out for yourself.

EDIT: Just as fun as when Tim posted it three months ago.

Game Biz 2

Posted by Shabadage Fri, 03 Nov 2006 23:13:00 GMT

GameBiz 2 Image 1 Recently a game crossed my path that brought back some fond memories of staying up far too late. The game I speak of is GameBiz 2. And as you can probably figure, it’s a simulation game based in the game industry.

While the first game was limited into strictly developing games, this new version adds engine development and licensing, budget re-releases, and console development; in addition to the classic game development. Yes, the graphics are limited; but the gameplay is extremely deep and (dare I say it?) strategic. Of course, all this comes at the cost of a rather steep learning curve, so it may take you a while to fully grasp what’s going on; but once you do, a rather rewarding gaming experience awaits you.

Kongregate

Posted by Derek Yu Fri, 03 Nov 2006 15:46:00 GMT

Kongregate

It’s been a weird, hilarious, and active week here on TIGSource. My favorite kind! Other editors: next time jump in and join the fun! Seriously, we have like the largest roster of all the indie game sites and only like three people ever post at a time, it’s embarrassing.

Anyway:Kongregate is a casual-games start-up dedicated to creating an infectious community site for players and developers.”

A new indie gaming portal for flash games. Check the link if you want to submit a game for their alpha testing phase, or to enter their first contest ($1500 grand prize).

I like the site design! Looks trustworthy.

Tune

Posted by Albert Lai Fri, 03 Nov 2006 14:43:00 GMT

TuneWho exactly is this Steve Swink anyway?

All I know is that he keeps a fascinating blog on game design, updated at least once a week (for the last month, at least) dealing with topics that are, if not directly related to the indie gaming industry, at least interesting to read – the idea to revamp a MMO aimed at teaching Shakespeare is a cool read, to say the least.

But it’s not just the blog I’m here to ramble about- instead there is also an interesting prototype game he works on and posts about – "Tune: A Game About Game Design". Within Tune, the player controls a spindly, pogo-ish character that has to complete certain goals – but the goals can only be achieved by altering in-game parameters such as rotate speed, jump power, and so on. It’s incomplete at the moment.

Personally, I prefer the blog over the game at this point, though it’ll be interesting to see how the game progresses.

Swarm Racer

Posted by Tim Fri, 03 Nov 2006 12:03:00 GMT

Swarm RacerSome new stuff added to Swarm Racer version 2.11 which was released last month. There are four new tracks to play with, among other changes that no one really cares about.

Last I heard from lex, he is seriously thinking about naming/renaming his kids after toosh.

G-Force Preview

Posted by Tim Fri, 03 Nov 2006 11:15:00 GMT

boom3Retro is cool, and you know it. Even big name directors are getting into the game with Transformers and Speed Racer remakes.

Information about G-Force can be found over at bob’s site, and the2bears previewed it about a week ago.

Look forward to a release sometime next week.
