Beautiful World

Beautiful World

Beautiful World features a boss fight right in front of Big Ben, so it definitely scored a few bonus points in my book. This particular effort from Project Boueigun includes the usual array of power-ups, collectibles end level boss encounters.

Controls are at it’s most basic. Hold down the left shift key to shoot and press the Z key to launch a bomb. Scroll down slightly past the screenshots to get the latest version.

It’s going to be a crazy week for shooters, yes indeed.

Mogura 2

Posted by Tim Sat, 24 Jun 2006 22:33:00 GMT

Mogura 2Any shooter featuring a big red guy as the final boss deserves a mention on TIGSource.

Mogura 2 is an excellent freeware shmup by Krobon Station, featuring two characters with different abilities and weapons. Both gets a standard shield which can be activated using the X key. Hold the Z key to shoot, and tap the C key to initiate a special attack. Press the left control key to change the way your weapon operates.

A tutorial can be accessed from the main menu by selecting the third option. The second offers a difficulty setting. After picking a character, you can choose to either start from the first level or continue from the last stage attempted.

Installation can be a bit of a hassle but the effort is worth it. Rename the largest executable and cca file to the same name, then repeat for the smallest file. For example mogura2.exe, mogura2.cca, config.exe and config.cca. Click here to download the game.

Veck

Veck

Veck is the latest in a line of Geometry Wars clone for the PC, also a Retro Remakes Vector competition entry held just recently. It’s not surprising to see why it’s getting plenty of votes. Graphics are great, the effects are mesmerizing, plus the enemy ships have their own specific behaviors and attack patterns.

Selecting directional firing is advised, although a joypad is still the best choice for these sort of games. Map the right analog to your directional firing keys using JoyToKey for a dual analog configuration. You can guide your ship towards a corner to survive for the first five minutes, but it’s not such a safe haven when the portals begin to appear.

A new type of enemy is introduced every minute, and your ship gets a weapon upgrade when that happens. The ability to fire hundreds of bullets per second is the reward for lasting at least ten minutes in the game. Shields automatically regenerate over time.

Sometimes the quit window does not appear on screen when the escape key is pressed. Simply tap the enter key to quit when this happens. The sequel is currently in production.

Here’s a video of Veck in action.

Fuzetsu

Posted by Albert Lai Fri, 02 Jun 2006 07:48:00 GMT

Oh, man, those dastardly indie developers. They’re always going after your hard drive space. If your space wasn’t for graphics it’d be for sound, and if it wasn’t either then you probably weren’t playing a game. Back in your day, space was precious. Every bit counted and you’d be damned if the programmers didn’t milk everything they could out of a processor cycle.

Clocking in at 4kb, Fuzetsu is a itty-bitty curtain shooter shmup. As gameplay goes, it’s not particularly difficult. The strings of bosses spew elaborate patterns of bullets. Getting these bullets within the white circle prompts your ship to fire back. Maybe it’s passive-aggressive. Who knows?

Anyway, though the gameplay (and the bullet patterns, for that matter) will not be particularly new for those who have mastered rRootage, it is still a fun and simplistic way to spend some time for the rest of us mortals.

Apologies to Jos Hirth for linking directly to the game.

Grid Wars

Posted by Albert Lai Tue, 23 May 2006 16:06:00 GMT

Now, some of you may be glad that TIGSource is back, but I think no one is happier than the staff at PCGamer. Oh, sure, they claim that they’re the ‘best-selling magazine about PC games’, but we know what site they surreptitiously check for stuff to fill out the freeware section of the Gamut. TIGSource! Well, probably not TIGSource, because they wouldn’t still be talking about Cloud if they checked this site often.

Enough about PCGamer. Some of you may remember "Geometry Wars" that was featured as a game on the XBox360, as well as a high-score video. Well, if you aren’t really into blowing your wads (of cash) on it to play this game, Grid Wars may make the wait worthwhile!

Grid Wars Grid Wars is a standard Robotron-style game. However, faithfulness of this recreation raises it several steps above the other Robo-likes. The sparks and distortion patterns created by your shots and enemy deaths seem simple at first, but quickly evolve into stunning light-shows as the game progressively becomes harder, even if the graphics don’t match up to the real Geometry Wars. The monster designs range from black holes, snakes, and things that, if I were to try to describe them within this list, would break parallelism so bad my English teacher would come back just to smack me upside the head.

One more thing, when you start this dongle up, make sure that you set the controls to either mouse or keyboard, since the game sets the control scheme to dual analog sticks by default.
