Preview: Gymnast

Walaber, the creator of the squishy physics-based game JelloCar, has released a trailer for his next game, titled Gymnast. The game, which is controlled by twin analog sticks, will be released for free on the PC and Xbox 360.

It looks really ace, I must say! For more information on the game, hit up Walaber’s Gymnast thread on Fun-Motion.

Preview: Project Rhapsody

Posted by Derek Yu Thu, 13 Mar 2008 17:26:00 GMT

Jesus, the things you can do with Multimedia Fusion now! Why, back in my day we had to walk five miles in the snow just to make an active object… grumble grumble!

The above video is a preview of the engine behind Project Rhapsody, an RPG that’s been in development for a few years now. While “ambitious RPG” + “unpaid development” + “years” can = “vaporware,” the team still seems active and updates are coming fairly regularly now. And it looks pretty fantastic!

Another reason why I’m so jonesed about the game is that they’ve got Snake (aka Imson) on board. You may remember him as the pixel artist behind Katamari Colossus, but he’s also a fantastic painter.

“Hit the jump,” as they say, for some awesome concept art he did for PR. Good luck, guys! Become legendary! We’re rooting for you!

Design a Boss For Noitu Love 2?!

Posted by Derek Yu Fri, 07 Mar 2008 01:14:00 GMT

I thought to get people’s juices flowing I’d let the people decide what to make a secret, hidden boss. What you have to do is think of something completely awesome and then give that idea to me and I pay you absolutely nothing, but you get a credit at the end of the game (if you really want to).

Sounds like a pretty fair deal! But in all seriousness, it’s for the fun... what more reason do you need? Hit up Joakim’s site for more info. We’re also discussing it on the forums.

Berserker: How to Paint a Wall Mural

Posted by Derek Yu Tue, 26 Feb 2008 14:33:00 GMT

Berserker

After a handful of posts about his philosophies regarding manliness and the Universe, Michal Marcinkowski has finally put up some new info about Berserker, his hand-to-hand physics-based deathmatch game that takes place in an abandoned prison. This step-by-step guide will show you how to paint a cell block in a delightful crimson red… just in time for Spring! Martha Stewart approves.

In the comments, Michal reveals in the comments that:

The game is pretty much playable, although bots have no waypoints, no network code, and a lot of bugs. Really good ideas are always welcome but we’ve probably thought about them all already.

Let’s hope for a soon release!

castlecrashers

Castle Crashers, by The Behemoth, is slated for a Summer release.

This information was revealed in a Microsoft press release following their keynote. It’s really more of an excuse to post more screenshots. I want to play all of these games very badly.

Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet News

Posted by ithamore Sat, 16 Feb 2008 02:40:00 GMT

Some wonderful news on ITSP came out last month:

Our first round of Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet demos is now completed and the reactions from all publishers were overwhelmingly positive. Not only was the esthetic of our game praised but everyone was amazed at the game play as well. Of course, our intention is not only to make a beautiful game but to create a memorable gaming experience. I’m glad this is coming through.

The demos mentioned in the quote were live demonstrations to publishers such as “Sony, Ubisoft, Microsoft and a few others” (this list of publishers is from Michel Gagné’s December 1st post on his blog).

Blast Works Still in the Works

Posted by Derek Yu Tue, 12 Feb 2008 16:02:00 GMT

Blast Works

Blast Works, the Wii shoot ‘em up based Kenta Cho’s Tumiki Fighters, now has it’s own development blog on IGN. There’s only one entry so far, and it discusses the game’s built-in Shape (Ship) Editor.

People who were dubious of Kenta Cho’s connection to the game may be comforted somewhat by the fact that the blog discusses Tumiki Fighters and how the developers are building upon the basic concept (no pun intended). Overall, the game seems like it’s moving farther away from Tumiki Fighters (indeed, they’re rebuilding the engine from the ground up to support “unrestricted 3d environments”). I actually think this is a good thing. It feels more like its own game now, rather than an unnecessary upgrade.

Hit the jump for two gameplay videos (one of the editor and one showing some actual shooting).

Splinter Source... Redux?

Posted by Derek Yu Mon, 11 Feb 2008 23:11:00 GMT

WIP Platformer Based on Splinter Source

Zi-Xiao Liang wants me to tell you that he’s working on a new game based on one of his old games. Unfortunately, it’s not a remake of his top-down shooter Scientology PWNED, which ironically got PWNED pretty hard by Scientology. Instead, Mr. Liang is (probably wisely) choosing to base this game on Splinter Source, his side-scrolling 2d stealth platformer.

Hit the jump for five more screenshots of this as-of-yet-unnamed, no-release-date-set platform game which Zi-Xiao is describing as “Super Mario mashed with Splinter Cell, piled on Metal Gear Solid (and if the player chooses to do so, sprinkled with Contra).” Which is a recipe that makes either a Roast Awesomebeef or a Meatloaf of Disaster (hold the TIGERSauce). Let’s hope it’s the former!
