Barkley, Shut up and Jam: Gaiden, Chapter 1

Posted by Derek Yu Wed, 21 Feb 2007 02:52:00 GMT

Barkley, Shut up and Jam: Gaiden

A game that starts off by saying “Warning: the game you are about to play is canon” and then goes on to use the word “octoroon” twice in the first 5 minutes of play is a game that is likely to change the way you perceive games for the rest of your life…

Or, you know, it could just be another great RPG starring Charles Barkley.

This demo, which is outrageously short, is probably the most indie game I’ve ever played. Aside from using the word “octoroon,” BSUAJ:G also puts licensed NBA players in a post-apocalyptic setting, contains numerous obscure references to gaming, and is made with RPGMaker. In other words, this is a game that has so little chance of getting sold commercially that even if it was guaranteed to sell 50 billion copies and also cure AIDS a publisher would probably never touch it with a ten-foot zauber.

When is Chef Boyardee going to finish this damn game so I can learn some mothafuckin’ Verboten Jams?!

Larry Bird

Conclusion: in terms of cleverness and entertainment value, this paltry demo chaos dunks Super Columbine Massacre RPG so hard it’s not even funny.

STIFFS Demo

Posted by BMcC Mon, 19 Feb 2007 19:24:00 GMT

Cocaine's a hell of drug. Remember Fredryk Phox? He was the funniest dude on the internet before there even was a YouTube. Before there even was an internet!

If you’ve followed his stuff at all (I’m somewhat of a connoisseur myself), you know he kind of flies in all directions. Movies, drawing, music, animation—even gunplay. And now… videogames.

STIFFS is a platformer slash shooter in which you run around as either Fred or his friend Jake killing zombies and, well, doing drugs. (Like coke! And Xanax!)

Aim and fire with the mouse, move with WASD, reload with R, and access your weapons and other menus with Esc. Click here to download the demo.

Be warned, it’s still pretty early. It doesn’t run that well on my machine, either. Maybe my laptop “just sucks” like the readme says. Or maybe, just maybe, you need to learn how to finish a bloody project for once in your life, FREDDY BOY.

Arthouse Games: Braid Preview

Posted by Derek Yu Tue, 13 Feb 2007 15:01:00 GMT

Braid

Arthouse Games has a SPOILERIFIC exclusive preview of Jonathan Blow’s time-bending platform game Braid. And boy, did he like it:

“Even with this rough build, I was able to draw one simple conclusion without doubts or reservations: Braid is the most innovative and interesting game I have ever played.”

Bold words, but Braid does seem like it has a lot of neat ideas! Even though time-shifting has been utilized in 3d commercial games like Blinx and Prince of Persia, it seems like it’s better suited to two-dimensions. I can’t wait to try it when it’s released (first quarter 2007?).

Again, don’t read the article if you don’t want to be spoiled. Rotten. Like Paris Hilton.

Geez, I guess this is going to be like Fost Appreciation week here at TIGSource, or something!

Force Majeure Demo

Posted by Derek Yu Wed, 07 Feb 2007 20:34:00 GMT

force majeure

Originally made for the Autofire 2007 Competition, Force Majeure is a work-in-progress arcade shooter from Monokey. But now there’s a one stage demo you can try out! The game sports some pretty gorgeous graphics and really arcadey music. Looks like the visual style was inspired by In the Hunt and Irem arcade games in general.

Other than the great presentation of the game, they’ve added a nice multiplier system that adds more interest to the game. Earn medals and raise your multiplier by dissolving enemy bullets and finishing off enemy fighters at close range. It makes dying totally frustrating if you’re going for a highscore, though. Seriously, I gave my roommate two beatings tonight out of sheer frustration. And that’s pretty sad when your roommate is your grandma!

Pixel's Upcoming Shooter

Posted by Tim Tue, 23 Jan 2007 18:21:00 GMT

pxstg-070106

Right, I was a little ambiguous when composing that last article – so here it is again. A collection of screenshots from Pixel’s shooter, which would normally disappear forever when it’s taken down from his desktop page. If I’m not mistaken, the collage above previews four out of the five stages to be found in his upcoming release.

Gives a good idea of what he’s been working on. Details about where to download the soundtrack to this shooter can be acquired from the other post.

And while we’re on the subject of games which uses very little colors…
