N+ Launch Trailer

Posted by BMcC Sun, 24 Feb 2008 14:53:00 GMT

Here is the final trailer for N+, which is out now on Xbox LIVE Arcade (as Raigan would not let us forget). In the words of Jon Mak, “If you don’t buy N+... you’re not indie.”

But indie cred aside, it looks to be great and chock full of wonderful content. Check it out at the very least!

Jasper's Journeys Released! (at long last)

Posted by ARelativelyHotGirl Fri, 22 Feb 2008 14:32:00 GMT

Jasper's Journeys

For the longest time, Lexaloffle (the one-man indie developer of Zen Puzzle Garden and Chocolate Castle) has been taunting the internet with an enticing animated gif of his then upcoming game Jasper’s Journeys. After a long development time, the game has finally been released today: for Mac OSX and Windows.

Jasper’s Journeys is a decidedly retro experience, and while playing the demo, one is reminded of the flavor of Apogee shareware games from the past. There are gems, keys and power-ups to collect, and the difficulty seems unforgiving – you end up restarting a lot.

The graphics and sounds are very appealing, in the fine tradition of all the Lexaloffle games.

N+ on XBLA This Wednesday!

Posted by Derek Yu Mon, 18 Feb 2008 10:13:00 GMT

N Plus

After what seems like forever, N+ will finally be arriving to the XBLA Marketplace this Wednesday, February 20th, at 9am PST. This update to N will cost you a mere 800 points and features new levels (450 in total!), new graphics, and a built-in level editor.

At this point we’re completely anxious, worried that it’s too hard and no one will buy it because the graphics are so minimal and stylized (though stylish), and after struggling with the demo for the hypothetical 3 minutes you have before people get bored, they’ll give up instead of pushing on and finding their inner ninja. All we can do is hope people will see/play past all that and get incurably addicted.

But of course! If you love challenging, well-made platformers, this is a must-buy. And it’d be a great way to show Microsoft what kinds of games we want to see on their console.

Hearty congratulations to raigan and mare for getting their baby out the door!

BONESAW!

Posted by Derek Yu Thu, 14 Feb 2008 19:22:00 GMT

Bonesaw

Yo, guys and gals… Bonesaw is here! This eagerly-anticipated platform game saw some delays this week as a few Multimedia Fusion-related bugbears creeped into the works last minute. Thankfully, these issues have been addressed. Otherwise we wouldn’t be here, would we!

The game, inspired in part by Nintendo’s Kirby series, combines fast-paced platform action with frantic beatings (and some occasional puzzle-solving). If you saw the trailer Shabadage posted earlier, you pretty much know what to expect: bombs ‘sploding, springs bouncin’, balls flyin’... monsters big and small getting pounded with fists as well as the mighty BONESAW. The fact that it stars a hockey player who’s going after an evil referee just makes it that much better.

This thing is fresh out of the oven right now, so get it while it’s hot!

And head over to the creator’s blog for some insight into the ideas behind the game.

EDIT: The soundtrack, by Josh Whelchel, is available from Josh’s site here.

Shit Game

Posted by Terry Wed, 13 Feb 2008 15:45:00 GMT

Shit Game” is a short new game from Mark Johns, the creator of the excellent Space Barnacle, the even excellenter Standard Bits, and the frankly amazing looking Rotrix. I don’t think there’s any way I could improve on the perfect simplicity of his announcement, so I’ll just repeat it:

SHIT GAME SHIT GAME SHIT GAME SHIT GAME SHIT GAME SHIT GAME SHIT GAME SHIT GAME

SHIT GAME SHIT GAME SHIT GAME SHIT GAME SHIT GAME SHIT GAME SHIT GAME SHIT GAME

Splinter Source... Redux?

Posted by Derek Yu Mon, 11 Feb 2008 23:11:00 GMT

WIP Platformer Based on Splinter Source

Zi-Xiao Liang wants me to tell you that he’s working on a new game based on one of his old games. Unfortunately, it’s not a remake of his top-down shooter Scientology PWNED, which ironically got PWNED pretty hard by Scientology. Instead, Mr. Liang is (probably wisely) choosing to base this game on Splinter Source, his side-scrolling 2d stealth platformer.

Hit the jump for five more screenshots of this as-of-yet-unnamed, no-release-date-set platform game which Zi-Xiao is describing as “Super Mario mashed with Splinter Cell, piled on Metal Gear Solid (and if the player chooses to do so, sprinkled with Contra).” Which is a recipe that makes either a Roast Awesomebeef or a Meatloaf of Disaster (hold the TIGERSauce). Let’s hope it’s the former!

Katakijin, or: Clothed Ninjas!

Posted by Lorne Whiting Fri, 08 Feb 2008 11:50:00 GMT

Katakijin

Katakijin is a work-in-progress ninja game by forum member Ultim8p00, citing Nikujin, Ninja Gaiden, and Knytt as inspirations. It’s pretty badass.

Its fighting system allows for lots of variety in combat styles, and it’s definitely worth checking out the demo.

Also, here’s a youtube video of the first level (the entire demo) being completed rather effortlessly by the author of the game:

Delicious! There are two controls you can’t set in the options however: Space for Shurikens and Ctrl for MAGIC SUPER DOOPER.

Bonesaw Preview

Posted by Shabadage Sat, 02 Feb 2008 09:04:00 GMT

I’ve been watching the development of this game for quite a while, and now the embargo is over! I present to you Bonesaw, a game by Xerus; that’s based on an college inside joke that he hasn’t revealed yet. Regardless, this game has been extremely fun from very early on, and it’s getting pretty close to release. Don’t let the Kirby like graphics fool you, this game is fast and hard!

Shotgun Ninja

Posted by Derek Yu Tue, 29 Jan 2008 20:07:00 GMT

Shotgun Ninja

Another week, another game from the almighty cactus! This time you play as an angry, gun-toting ninja, trying to get his money back from his conniving accountant. Run, jump, gun, and grenade through 8 short-but-sweet levels. Getting used to wall-jumping and wall-climbing takes a little while, but once you do, it’s a blast. Ceiling kills for the win!

Add to that an online high score list (can you guess who’s number one?), and you’ve got a really addictive little platformer.

I love the graphics and sound… this could be one of my favorite cactus games yet!

Boom! Cortex Command: Build 20

Posted by BMcC Sat, 26 Jan 2008 11:28:00 GMT

I just love posting these little, horribly violent animation loops from Cortex Command.

Anyway, the 20th build has been released. Dunno why it hadn’t been posted here yet. (Maybe it had?)

Expect the usual bunch of improvements and tweaks. Download here.
