Dino Run

Dino Run

Pixeljam, the creators of Gamma Bros. and the Ratmaze games, have released Dino Run, the latest in their series of low-resolution Flash titles! The basic premise is that you are a little dinosaur escaping extinction! Run, run (and jump), as fast as you can to the end of each level before the “Wall of Doom” engulfs you.

This game’s a real charmer. Each of the 7 levels is meticulously rendered in beautiful lo-fi, with lots of little details that you will probably be too busy running past to notice. Along the way you’ll get to snack on birds, lizards, and fish, grab rides with pterodactyls, and discover lots of alternate passageways and secret nooks. Other dinosaurs that are fleeing the destruction will hinder you, help you, or just plain die at the hands of crashing meteors and other dangers – the entire atmosphere is kind of dreadful, in a really cute way.

There are quite a few extra features, like dino DNA upgrades, unlockable speedrun levels, various difficulty settings, and even a multiplayer online mode that lets you race against other dinos. A small donation will get you a Dino Run Bonus Package which lets you customize your dino’s look, among other things. Do eet – this game is really cool!

Missile Matador 1 and 2

Posted by Derek Yu Mon, 05 May 2008 14:43:00 GMT

Missile Matador

In Missile Matador you have to trick homing missiles into hitting each other… without hitting you. If you fall off the bottom of the screen, you also lose! It’s a fun concept, and it’s unnerving to see all those missiles trained at you in the brief breathing period before each level starts!

Missile Matador II extends the concept by adding timed missiles and a way to make your own levels (by editing text files). The rules of the game have also changed slightly – in order to win, you must reach a goal somewhere on the screen.

As an aside, “Missile Matador” is an awesome name. It sounds like something the VGNG would have come up with.

BDTUW is looking good! Made by Lo-Fi Minds for our VGNG Competition, the actual compo entry was a sweet promise of something more… much more! This vid drops its trousers a little lower, revealing brand new areas, characters, and mechanics. Yum!

On the Lo-Fi Minds blog, cactus explains that the aspect ratio has been changed to accommodate HD.

Fantastic Blood Boy!

Posted by Derek Yu Thu, 01 May 2008 00:38:00 GMT

Fantastic Blood Boy

A late entry for our VGNG Compo, Fantastic Blood Boy is a frantic action game from none other than the lovely Gustav Kilman! In the game you play the titular Blood Boy, who is as fantastic as he sounds. Your goal is to keep the clot crystals away from the Sock Puppets who are hopping around trying to get after it. To do this, simply touch the crystal and it will fly away – but when the crystal is flying, it won’t generate the various crazy weapons you need to destroy the Sock Puppets (and create up to two more crystals!).

It’s a simple, yet novel, system, that’s complemented by manic gameplay and a poppin’ visual style. Plus, Gustav has finally finished a game, which means that I can finally die and rest in peace. Thank you, Gustav! This is great!

Noitu Love 2 is out!

Posted by Xander Fri, 18 Apr 2008 14:10:00 GMT

Noitu Love 2

Oh yes, it’s finally here! Noitu Love 2 is the very long awaited sequel to the original side-scrolling mighty-morphing action game from Konjak. Hit up the site for both an extended demo version and to purchase the full version online. The forums do seem to list some problems with getting order emails through, which seems mainly to do with PayPal (although it worked for me), so if you can avoid using that then maybe a better plan as there are a number of payment options, but if not I’m sure it’ll probably work out fine anyway.

$20 may seem a little high (edit: according to the comments, this is apparently only the case if you’re a student… bugger…), but I swear on my reputation as the most ‘occasional’ contributor to TIGSource that if you at least give the demo a try you will not be disappointed. And if you have already, then you’re probably too busy clicking the above link to read this. I understand. Do what you must. As well as the main 7-level IGF finalist game, the full version also offers a wealth of unlockable content, including one extra that’s so awesome I swear I’m running my second-playthrough pantless.

Happy gaming TIG!

Gish 2 Cannot Come Soon Enough for Me

Posted by Derek Yu Thu, 17 Apr 2008 17:11:00 GMT

On the Cryptic Sea blog, programmer Alex Austin explains that the physics for our favorite ball of tar have changed quite a bit in Gish 2. Gish is now composed of 128 independently moving particles, as opposed to being a single, deformable object. The possibilities for this, of course, are tremendous!

I can’t wait for this game! (whine)

Facewound (Alpha)

Posted by Derek Yu Thu, 17 Apr 2008 05:33:00 GMT

Facewound

Just got around to trying the Facewound alpha, which was released by Garry Newman (of Garry’s Mod fame) a couple weeks ago. The game, which was a few years in the making and a few more years abandoned, is very much incomplete… and is a bit dull if you play it straight (that is, without enabling the various debug features). But try pressing a few keys and all of a sudden you can fly through buildings (“V”) and wield everything from chainsaws to crossbows (“N” for credits, “B” for the buy menu)! Now we’re talkin’!

It also comes with a level editor and a slew of unfinished maps to play with. Facepunch forum members have already started modding the game, with some interesting results. To play custom maps, simply copy and edit one of the two “JumpTo” batch files in the main directory of the game.

Definitely nice to have a violent, technically-advanced side-scroller to tide one over until the release of Berserker/Link Dead (both of which are currently being retooled)!

Side note: Arthur “Mr. Podunkian” Lee did the animations in Facewound.

(Thanks, mosh!)

Karoshi 2.0

Posted by Derek Yu Thu, 10 Apr 2008 17:59:00 GMT

Karoshi 2.0

The basic idea behind the original Karoshi was completely counter-intuitive to most games: in every level you must FIND A WAY TO KILL YOURSELF. It was harder than it seemed!

In Karoshi 2.0, creator Jesse Venbrux extends that metaphor across 42 more levels, creating some of the most LOL-worthy and mind-bending puzzles I have ever seen. This is a true battle between Man and Game, and Game is using every trick up its sleeve. Prepare to have your head messed with (sometimes literally). I love it!

Karoshi 2.0 also comes with a level editor and a timed version of the original game (minus the irritating blood splatters on the screen that obscured the playfield).
