Bernie of FA Fame announced today (okay, yesterday) that he will release not one, but two freeware games this year. The first being Darkside Adventures, which you already know about, and the second being Reactor 09, a graphic adventure with probably very amusing dialog. Or it might be serious, I dunno. Looks sharp, either way!
Hm. I just realized that maybe we haven’t posted about Darkside Adventures.

Well then! Darkside Adventures is a SMB2-inspired platformer that looks to be extra groovy. According to the site, its “defining features” are:
- Running up walls
- Shooting stars
- Blue guy in pajamas
- Stars!!
So there you have it.

Not so much!
But here’s a shooting game Pixel helped create, along with some other Japanese guy who goes by “BA2.”
The game is called Die Die Galaxy and is actually quite fun! (Click the cat head at the bottom of the page to download.)
It’s kinda like Space Invaders, but instead of shooting aliens with lasers, you shoot alien cat heads with rockets. The game ends when you run out of rockets.
Left/right arrow keys to move, space bar to shoot and select.
My high score’s 61. It’s pretty challenging! Also, I suck.
BONUS NEWS! I mentioned this in a comment earlier, but Pixel’s last journal entry for October read, “My goal for November: finish the shooting game.”

Invisible Vision – a “submarine shootem up game in FPS”. I suppose that means I like FPS after all.
Well… reposting works for GoP. Direct download link. Double click on iv.exe to begin.
(Press the up arrow key to move forward and hold the Z key to fire a torpedo. Use the left and right arrow keys to turn.)

As most of you surely know, I am the reigning Frog Hunt World Champion.
For the sake of those poor, unenlightened souls who haven’t experienced the raw power that is Frog Hunt, here’s a quick overview. But first a caveat! This game… will change you.
Frog Hunt is an experimental game by Johan Peitz, founder of Free Lunch Design, and true friend of indie gamers everywhere. As I recall, the game was based on a classroom discussion he led concerning creativity that produced a number of arbitrary (and terrible) videogame concepts. He then took the best (the worst) of these concepts and made them into a game. A delightfully broken game.
I play three to four hours each day, as part of my rigid World Champion training, and I’ve still yet to uncover its mysteries.

Ovine
Ovine’s Cholo
Remake, which has reached its first anniversary, places you in control of a
"RAT" droid, which must be used to free your fellow citizens and yourself from
the bunker after generations of imprisonment. Eventually, you will collect specialized droids strewn
about the robot controlled city to aid your mission.
In the website’s
archives, there is plenty of backstory provided in the pre-nuclear war
news of the
city and in a copy of the
novella that had
been included with the original game in 1986. I appreciate the extra content, but it’s not necessary for getting into the game. Although, some helpful hints can be gleaned from the news.
It’s a very open game that not only encourages but demands exploration.
Besides having to find the droids and Rampaks need to complete the game, there
are plenty of hidden secrets to discover. It has a slow pace (which is
very fitting for its atmosphere) and can easily take 5 to 10 hours complete. There is a light FPS element to Cholo but
don’t expect it to get intense.
In addition to all the venturing in the game, I admire its Tron-ish
look and its futuristic ambient music. Ovine could have made the city larger, but
this game shines in so many ways that I have no real reason to complain.
Now, please excuse me. The computer has reminded me to drink my Choco
while it’s still warm.

Well, to make up for my RE-posting of an old news item (BAD SHAB!), I’ve decided to share another game in the same “Zelda-ish” style, so NYAH!
Errm, anyway, the game in question is titled Lynn’s Legacy; and as previously stated it’s a Zelda Like game. You play as the mercenary Lynn (who has somewhat of a bad attitude for such a cutish game) who is on a quest to figure who tried to kill her and why. Yes, pretty standard fare stuff, but that doesn’t detract from the fun.
Also notice that there IS a linux version. (For all two of you who run games natively in linux.)

I’m sure some of you have heard of Akuji the Demon (Careful, the site’s in japanese, but you can always run it through Babelfish, failing that, it’s the second link on the Games page), a fun freeware effort from Japanese freeware maker Buster. (I’d provide a link to the english translation patch, but Do-jin Nyuu! is down right now).
Well, it seems that another one of Buster’s games has been translated, this one being Guardian of Paradise a little adventure game that more than just kinda resembles A Link to the Past. I’ve sunk about an hour into the game, and I’m having quite a bit of fun with it, so why don’t you hit that link above; and check it out for yourself.
EDIT: Just as fun as when Tim posted it three months ago.

Recently a game crossed my path that brought back some fond memories of staying up far too late. The game I speak of is GameBiz 2. And as you can probably figure, it’s a simulation game based in the game industry.
While the first game was limited into strictly developing games, this new version adds engine development and licensing, budget re-releases, and console development; in addition to the classic game development. Yes, the graphics are limited; but the gameplay is extremely deep and (dare I say it?) strategic. Of course, all this comes at the cost of a rather steep learning curve, so it may take you a while to fully grasp what’s going on; but once you do, a rather rewarding gaming experience awaits you.

Who
exactly is this Steve Swink anyway?
All I know is that he keeps a fascinating blog on game design, updated at least
once a week (for the last month, at least) dealing with topics that
are, if not directly related to the indie gaming industry, at least interesting
to read – the idea to revamp a MMO
aimed at teaching Shakespeare is a cool read, to say the least.
But it’s not just the blog I’m here to ramble about- instead there
is also an interesting prototype game he works on and posts about – "Tune:
A Game About Game Design". Within Tune, the player controls a spindly,
pogo-ish character that has to complete certain goals – but the goals can only
be achieved by altering in-game parameters such as rotate speed, jump power,
and so on. It’s incomplete at the moment.
Personally, I prefer the blog over the game at this point, though it’ll be
interesting to see how the game progresses.

Some new stuff added to Swarm Racer version 2.11 which was released last month. There are four new tracks to play with, among other changes that no one really cares about.
Last I heard from lex, he is seriously thinking about naming/renaming his kids after toosh.
