In Missile Matador you have to trick homing missiles into hitting each other… without hitting you. If you fall off the bottom of the screen, you also lose! It’s a fun concept, and it’s unnerving to see all those missiles trained at you in the brief breathing period before each level starts!
Missile Matador II extends the concept by adding timed missiles and a way to make your own levels (by editing text files). The rules of the game have also changed slightly – in order to win, you must reach a goal somewhere on the screen.
As an aside, “Missile Matador” is an awesome name. It sounds like something the VGNG would have come up with.

These are two acid techno music games by Hideki Kubo, which can be found on his Download page. In the first, vs Music, the main mode is Shooting[Play]. It pits the player against a single boss ship that has 3 lives, and the boss’s fire patterns are sequenced to the music. Movement of the ship is slower than I normally like, but the slowness also makes dodging that much more precise. Use C for continuous fire, X to clear the screen of shots with a bomb, and SPACE to get past the intro screen and to start a play mode.
Action Jockey, the second game, is a 2D, fixed screen jump-and-shmp. The available enemies and bosses are changed by adjusting mixer settings during the Acid Machine Phase. Of the 3 bosses, I’ve only been able to beat the Pong Paddle bosses so far, and it seems the game simply loops until you run out of hearts. You can fire with C and X can be used to jump, double jump, or slide (when your crouched).
More info on the other modes of vs Music and Action Jockey’s variations can be found below in the extended.

In Yume Nikki (or “Dream Diary”), you play a young girl who can delve into a bizarre, and sometimes extremely frightening, dreamworld in order to collect “effects” that can alter her appearance in the dream. Some of the effects also have abilities that can be used there. At (almost) any time, our heroine can wake herself up and return to her small, spartan apartment, where she can write in her diary (save), or play a simple minigame on the television.
I really like this game. The lack of dialogue or any “action” fills me with this strange sense of dread. I also like the contrast between the tiny apartment and the enormous dreamworld. And visually, the game really reminds me very much of Earthbound (especially Moonside!) and cactus, which is a pretty awesome and terrifying mix.
Download the English version of the game here (42 Mb), via Rapidshare. The download includes the RPGMaker runtime, as well as instructions on how to configure your computer’s language support to play the game. It’s a fairly painless process.
Thanks, Anarkex!

Our dear and prolific friend Ikiki has finally carved out a home for himself on the interwebs. On his website you can find downloads for all his games, as well as some bewildering animated gifs featuring the signature naked men we’ve come to know and love (see left).
Even better, there are two new games to enjoy (at the top of the list). Truly amazing.

Nigoro / GR3 Project’s latest Flash game, Mekuri Master, puts you in the role of a panty-lovin’ pervert. Swing the mouse to lift up girls’ skirts as you run down the hall, raising your “Mekuri Meter” with every successful lift. When the meter gets full, transform into the “Mekuri Master,” who’s skills are so l33t that he can even upskirt female gangsters and wrinkled old teachers! It’s pervy fun (and not recommended to try in real life).
According to friend Shih Tzu, there’s some history behind this game:
See, according to Japanese Wikipedia, flipping up girls’ skirts, or skirt-mekuri, was a fad in Japanese schools among boys (and girls), particularly from the 1960s through the 1980s. This was supposedly Marilyn Monroe’s fault, or something. The level of societal concern over this varied depending on the age on the perpetrators and the exact nature of the incidents.
But honestly, the first person I thought of when I saw this game: Prometheus, aka Arne. Any chance of a remake that features super low-cut white cotton panties?

Basho Kioku is a fun memory game from the developers of Cursor*10 and xananeko. A grid of 36 tiles confronts you, and in each level you are shown a subset of those tiles which you can click. The goal of the game is to click every tile once, and just once, without running out the timer. Six markers can be used to help jog your memory.
A simple idea that is implemented well. I actually managed to beat it with a score of 11100. I credit Brain Age for my amazing victory!

Cursor*10 is an amazing little doujin flash game that asks “Cooperate by oneself?!” You have 10 little cursors and you have to make it up to the 16th floor. I’ve made it to the top and my high score is 183. I think that’s pretty good (i.e. I know you can beat me)!

Happy New Year! Hopefully you all celebrated these holidays in grandiose style, because that’s just how I like to think Tigers roll.
News out of the way first, Mirror Moon and Revolve Translations have decided to simply merge together into the singular Mirror Moon which has had a slight thematical upgrade to reflect the move. Nothing major, but it looks cool and I applaud the move, since both were responsible for Tsukihime and their alliance ought to ensure more quality releases. On that note, translation progress is going very smoothly indeed. Unlimited Blade Works, the second route to ‘Fate Stay/Night’ is incredibly close to release, with mostly just the installer and beta testing to be done. Strategy RPG ‘Utawarerumono’ is getting a very confident thumbs up (Thumbs can be confident. I asked a scientist) at the moment, with the blog going so far as to say that they may just ignore beta testing and release it when the installer is finished.
And since I’m on a roll with the news here, more Type-Moon related news is that ‘Melty Blood: Actress Again’ has been announced for 2008, as a new installment to the Doujin Fighting Game Series. New features include three different fighting styles for each character (how different they are remains to be seen) and new characters including Riesbyfe Stridberg and Michael Roa Valdamjong. The Policenauts translation has apparently reached a few technical hurdles, but thanks to some joint work between that team and an earlier Tales of Phantasia team the situation seems to be slowly rectifying itself. Go fan-game communities!
That’s about it for news I guess. One thing I should mention is that Rz, is calling you out for a battle. That’s right, you. Take your hand out that biscuit packet, you’re not Megaman. You’re an Ur-Quan Master! Saturday 12th (this month) is going to be game night again, although this time will be a little different. Call it unofficial, or elite, or underground or whatever you want. I’ll instead be referring to it as simply; TIG TOURNAMENT! Registration will take place in the forums so I’ll put a link up when that’s available, just so that we can work out brackets and such. The game will be Star Control 2 which can either be a very large download or a very small one depending on what add-ons you’d like to have. Apparently ‘sound’ is considered an add-on here.
Feel free to comment, critique and all sorts, as most of this isn’t set in stone. What is definite though is that it will take place on the 12th and involve SC2, so if you don’t feel like getting your ass handed to you by Rz then I’d get practicing!
(Ghost Organisation by rz, because I sucks at that sort of thing. And, bonus TIGWear for Tr00jg in the extended!)

Below are several music games akin to Electroplanton. However, they are free and playable in Windows, so you can more easily use a streaming audio recorder to save any enjoyable, random music you might generate.
Kanoguti’s most spectrally encompassing of them is Mono World (pictured to the right). It contains 10 gameplay variations (aka worlds) that can be selected at the top of the menu screen. The mouse is used as the main inface (left-click adds to most worlds and right-click usually resets a world). Pressing “enter” returns to the menu. Note: the download link is at the bottom of Freem’s page next to the drive icon that has an arrow pointing down into it. In other words, look for the link with this icon to its left:
A few of Kanoguti’s similar games are Glass Park (No71), Seasons (No66), and
Q.q (No84). Then there are Wave Searcher, Sound Collage Wave, and Sound Collage Electron, each of which only have one form of play, but the wave files they use can be augmented or replace, which makes them more customizable. The controls are usually similar amongst all these games: some use “esc” instead of “enter” to return to the menu and the last part of Glass Park uses the left mouse button to select creation points while the arrow keys are used to spawn musical elements.
Check the extended for images of the other games.
Edit: Since the direct downloads didn’t work, the post has been changed to help those who had trouble figuring out how to download Kanoguti’s games from his software page. Also, (for those who had trouble with the description for finding them) here are the links to the auto-download pages of Kanoguti’s games on Freem: Mono World and Wave Searcher.

WARMACHINE OVERLOAD is a manic shoot ‘em up from Dark Hell Company, which wins the prize for having the most intimidating company name ever. The game is based off of the old Konami shmup Thunder Cross (video), where you can earn up to four options that can then be arranged into preset formations during the game.
On top of that, you can slow down the game by pressing Shift (something you’ll be doing a lot of), and also charge up a beam that does big damage and cancels enemy shots (‘X’). Press ‘Z’ to shoot, and ‘C’ to change your option formation. Spacebar will take you back to the title screen (something I did quite a few times on accident).
I don’t know enough about the genre to be able to compare WARMACHINE OVERLOAD to other manic shoot ‘em ups, but I enjoyed it. The gritty pixel graphics are verra nice, and I like the various options offered by the game (option formation editor, stage select, replay feature, and multiple difficulty levels). Definitely take a look at it, and DHC’s other games.
Note: For help downloading from Vector, read this guide I wrote.
(Thanks, Javet! Check out his freeware thread on TIGForums where he’s serving up new games every day.)
