Penumbra: Overture Went Gold A While Ago

Posted by BMcC Wed, 11 Apr 2007 14:10:00 GMT

From the screenshot, I gather it's a lot like Nintendogs.

I meant to post this ages ago, but then… things. So here it is NOW!

Penumbra: Overture is the first in a trilogy of full, commercial followups to the 3D horror game/demo Penumbra.

I’d probably have a bit more to say about the game if it would run on my (shoddy) laptop. But it doesn’t. The screenshots and trailers look sweet, though!

Sprout

Posted by Derek Yu Wed, 04 Apr 2007 02:34:00 GMT

Sprout

Sprout is a cute game about a little bean that dreams of someday becoming a big oak tree. While I can’t necessarily sing the kinds of praises that the Jay is Games guys are singing, I did find the game to be extremely endearing. This is definitely trial-and-error type gameplay, but because your options are so limited, it never gets frustrating.

Tim's Top 10's and 20's of 2006

Posted by BMcC Tue, 20 Feb 2007 08:17:00 GMT

It's the Top, LOL

Tim is good at writing about games. So good, in fact, that he renders most other attempts at game journalism worthless. Such is his power.

So why not borrow wholesale from his blog! That’s what I always say.

He’s been posting, and will probably continue to post, Top 10 and 20 lists for 2006 that are well thought out, detailed, and expertly organized. But you wouldn’t expect anything less, would you?

The articles feature write ups, screenshots, and download links for all the games and are ordered by awesomeness (or sometimes alphabetically). Check em out here:

6 Days a Sacrifice

6 Days a Sacrifice

6 Days a Sacrifice, the fourth and final installment of the popular John DeFoe series of adventure games by Ben ‘Yahtzee’ Croshaw, is now available. I’ll be honest, I only played 5 Days a Stranger, and I didn’t even get through that. But it was quite good, what I played of it.

I heard this rumor a while back that the game was originally going to be called “8 Days a Hamburger,” and you were going to play a possessed hamburger. But then again, how would a crazy homeless guy without computer access know that kind of information?

Complete walkthrough of the game in the extended (highlight to view):

A Cure for the Common Cold

Posted by Tim Sun, 21 Jan 2007 04:30:00 GMT

In A Cure for the Common Cold, you assume the role of Derek the starving artist – who is on the verge of completing his magnum opus and submitting it to a major competition. Unfortunately the illness is draining all of his creativity, and he can feel the award for “Most Underwater Rocks Drawn” slipping from his grasp real quick. Can you find the cure soon enough to salvage the situation?

Well, not too certain about some parts of the description but I think that’s how the story goes. Basically it’s a short freeware AGS adventure game which shouldn’t take more than an hour to complete.

Marina “MashPotato” Siu-Chong is also working on The Hatmaker’s Tale for about half a year now. And The Arsecast Host said that female developers don’t exist… (heh)

Legend of the Lost Jewel

Posted by Tim Thu, 11 Jan 2007 13:38:00 GMT

maria

The Legend of the Lost Jewel was a game that provost wrote back in 1990-91 using a sierra style game engine that he wrote in BASIC when he was about 14-15. The story has been redeveloped, was rewritten in SCI, but because of SCI limitations, is now being re-rewritten in AGS.

To mimic old world sierra graphics with the later versions of the sierra interfaces, all backgrounds, animations and sprites are being made in 16 colors using the SCI editor, then adapted to AGS. Each icon can actually be clicked on just about anything in any scene and get a useful response.

The story:

Hundreds of years ago, a jewel existed that was held by an ancient tribe called the Rannu. It was a jewel that they believe held the universe into balance. The tribe was destroyed by conquistadors and the jewels were scattered through time.

Happenstance causes Derek, the main character into a modern day story of murder, deception and adventure. He looks to find his way home from an archaeology expedition and ends up entwined in the middle of blood-thirsty power hungry people seeking to find the gem in their own desires of greed.

As usual, some choice comments:

The screenshots almost made me weep for some reason.

Reactor 09

Posted by BMcC Fri, 08 Dec 2006 14:18:00 GMT

Oh man, bad news.

Tim said I could post this one, which means I must post this one or he will find me.

So Bernie’s new graphic adventure is out! It’s called Reactor 09 and as it turns out it is “mature,” as was foretold.

The game has you playing as a scientist convicted of murder trying to escape a doomed prison with the help of a CO. Throughout the game your decisions will affect the officer’s trust level and, as a result, the arc of the story. There are four different endings in all, though apparently the game itself is pretty short.

Now, Bernie claims he’s not happy with it, but I think he’s probably just nervous with it being his first “adult” title.

Left-click to walk and right-click-and-hold to manipulate the environment, ala Full Throttle. Enjoy!

Due This Year: Darkside Adventures, Reactor 09

Posted by BMcC Thu, 16 Nov 2006 09:24:00 GMT

Seriously amusing maybe?Bernie of FA Fame announced today (okay, yesterday) that he will release not one, but two freeware games this year. The first being Darkside Adventures, which you already know about, and the second being Reactor 09, a graphic adventure with probably very amusing dialog. Or it might be serious, I dunno. Looks sharp, either way!

Hm. I just realized that maybe we haven’t posted about Darkside Adventures. Stars!!

Well then! Darkside Adventures is a SMB2-inspired platformer that looks to be extra groovy. According to the site, its “defining features” are:

- Running up walls
- Shooting stars
- Blue guy in pajamas
- Stars!!

So there you have it.

Cholo Remake

Posted by ithamore Thu, 09 Nov 2006 16:31:00 GMT

Ovine

Cholo Start Ovine’s Cholo Remake, which has reached its first anniversary, places you in control of a "RAT" droid, which must be used to free your fellow citizens and yourself from the bunker after generations of imprisonment. Eventually, you will collect specialized droids strewn about the robot controlled city to aid your mission.

In the website’s archives, there is plenty of backstory provided in the pre-nuclear war news of the city and in a copy of the novella that had been included with the original game in 1986. I appreciate the extra content, but it’s not necessary for getting into the game. Although, some helpful hints can be gleaned from the news.

It’s a very open game that not only encourages but demands exploration. Besides having to find the droids and Rampaks need to complete the game, there are plenty of hidden secrets to discover.  It has a slow pace (which is very fitting for its atmosphere) and can easily take 5 to 10 hours complete. There is a light FPS element to Cholo but don’t expect it to get intense.

Cholo RizzoIn addition to all the venturing in the game, I admire its Tron-ish look and its futuristic ambient music. Ovine could have made the city larger, but this game shines in so many ways that I have no real reason to complain.

Now, please excuse me. The computer has reminded me to drink my Choco while it’s still warm.
