TIGSource Assemblee Competition

Calling all artists, musicians, and programmers! A two-part TIGSource Competition is beginning! In Assemblee, artists, musicians, and coders will work separately to create games together.

The first part is a month-long art and music competition, where entrants submit as many cool art and music assets as possible. Anything your febrile creative mind can come up with – characters, backgrounds, user interfaces, random icons, crazy tunes, sound effects, and who knows what else. We’ll cheer you on as you dump your brain onto the internet for us to look at.

In the second part is for you design monkeys and code wizards. You guys will have one month to make games using only the assets created for part 1. Could that sprite be used as a character for my game, or maybe as something else entirely? What kind of game does this song make me think of? You guys and gals better cheer the loudest for the artists and musicians, because whatever they make, you’ll have to use!

This is a competition about interpreting game artwork (both 2d and 3d) and music and finding interesting uses for them. It’s also about sharing – all the art and music will be made freely available to the public for non-commercial usage. Part 1 is beginning RIGHT NOW! Join the fun!

    (What.) In the butt?

  3. CT said about 4 hours later:

    Cool idea, this’ll be interesting!!

  4. John Evans said about 5 hours later:

I love working on game designs and programming, but I can’t draw to save my life. So this contest == WIN!

  5. Skofo said about 5 hours later:

    Brilliant idea.

  6. brandonnn said about 6 hours later:

That is the first time in all my years I have seen the word ‘febrile’.

    Also, header image is awesome.

Also, can’t wait to see what comes out of this.

    1) This compo idea is fucking fantastic. I’m predicting some awesome results, but I also think doing this compo on a regular basis (like once every 4-6 months). It’d generate a lot of material for others to use, plus it’d help musicians/artists get over slumps and just create material.

    2) In that same line of “getting over slumps” and “just producing”, NaNoWriMo is in November. Effectively knocking me out of the musician aspect this time around. Well, at least starting November 1st anyways…

  8. WineBlood said about 6 hours later:

I love the idea very much! I am a programmer/musician and I’ll try to come up with some songs for this compo (that would be my first compo! :) ). Not so sure I’ll participate to the programming part though since I have other projects at the moment…

  9. ngajoe said about 6 hours later:

What a great idea! I can’t wait to see what wacky stuff comes out of this!

  10. josh g. said about 7 hours later:

    YES. This is the rock.

Also this way even if I never finish a game I start for the compo, I can write a quick chiptastic song and still feel like I’ve accomplished something!

  11. reuben said about 8 hours later:

what a great compo idea :)

  12. Vishesh Handa said about 8 hours later:

This idea is just freaking amazing! I always have problems getting decent Art and Music!

  13. jay said about 9 hours later:

Oh hell yeah, so taking a shot at this!

  14. TheSpaceMan said about 9 hours later:

This is great, I was considering a simular theme for a contest in a different forum, but we didn’t have the userbase to actually get the artistic side done.

This could totaly work for TIGS, the only sad part is waiting a month untill you can start the coding part. ^^

  15. Jordan Magnuson said about 10 hours later:

Looking forward to this. Great idea… love the sharing and collaboration aspect.

  16. Farbs said about 10 hours later:

    So excited.

  17. Anthony Flack said about 12 hours later:

Great idea! Even guys like me, who are supposedly hard at work on commercial projects, with unfortunate deadlines ‘n’ shit, should be able to contribute a sprite or a sound effect or something.

  18. negative zero said about 12 hours later:

    awesome idea!

  19. DYH said about 12 hours later:

Wouldn’t it be cool if the artists whose pieces (from first round) turn out most frequently used (by everyone in second round) get some title or something?

I think they can get a lot more than cheers ;) So people actually wanna share stuff.

Sounds like a fun competition anyway!

  20. Outlander said about 14 hours later:

I’d love to help with this

  21. Anddy said about 17 hours later:

Took me a bit, but I finally stopped seeing two sad oppressed people throwing away trash on the top and stacking it on the bottom. Heh.

  22. pandafresh said about 17 hours later:

i dunno shit about shit when it comes to programming, but i can draw some pretty pictures. i’m guessin if draw some character, we should animate it,right?

  23. ColdBiscuit said about 17 hours later:

    You forgot Phase 3: Profit!

    :P

It sounds like a cool idea.

  24. falsion said about 22 hours later:

I love the idea. I feel like making a game with mismatched graphics and music. It’ll be like the Klik and Play days all over again with the standard clipart and asset library they came with. Good times.

  25. falsion said about 22 hours later:

    Just kidding of coarse.

  26. Adam said about 23 hours later:

This is perfect for me, I always hit a writers block and I need some assets to get me motivated!

  27. !CE-9 said about 23 hours later:

very cool idea. wonder how it’s going to work out. can’t wait to see the assets. (good-bye FillRect!)

    @Anddy: welcome to the club!=)

  28. Box'a'Music said about 24 hours later:

Perfect considering well working on projects i like to dump alot of randomn things i seem to make.

I think the second part will be time consuming for those looking through all the materials to find something they like.

  29. rayteoactive said 1 day later:

Cool. So artist can just leave random artworks in and not care about the follow up? If so, I’m in!

  30. Pyabo said 1 day later:

Awesome idea. No fair using your own resources from round 1 in round 2. :)

  31. skaldicpoet9 said 1 day later:

Awesome. I can’t wait to see what will come out of this. I wish I wasn’t in procrastination mode right now or I would join in.

  32. Foppy said 1 day later:

Took me a bit, but I finally stopped seeing two sad oppressed people throwing away trash on the top and stacking it on the bottom. Heh.

Haha only after your comment do I see that these are two happy birds and not two sad humans.

    Great compo idea!

  33. anothergol said 1 day later:

What I believed to be a guy with sad face waving chopsticks turned out to be a happy chicken playing with boxes.

  34. Synnah said 1 day later:

Excellent! I’ll definitely contribute some music for this. Awesome theme!

  35. Krux said 1 day later:

whohoo, this is definitely a great idea, i will be there as a coder.

  36. Jake said 1 day later:

Ok so I have a question…It just says “artists” and then says we need to make “art” including characters, backgrounds, whatever we want etc…But then it says the winning pieces of art will be used in the game competition following, does that mean all art needs to be sprites? Or am I aloud to use pencil or photoshop or even paint/crayons/markers to make some bigger art, then the game makers just sprite whatever I draw in a smaller, less detail way? Tl;dr, Is this a spriting competition or am I aloud to use other medias for the gamemakers to just referance for their sprites?

  37. Magnulus said 1 day later:

Character voices allowed? Provided we give a wide enough library of vocals for the character that don’t directly influence what kind of a game it would be?

  38. Magnulus said 1 day later:

  39. space said 1 day later:

    I love this idea.

  40. Questioneer said 1 day later:

    Question about part 2.

Can any piece of art that was submitted be used, or only parts that won?

  41. Matt said 1 day later:

Awesome idea. I’d participate if I wasn’t already obliged to another project currently.

  42. Arthur Protasio said 1 day later:

For a moment there I thought the games had to be developed in the Assembly language.

    Good thing I’m wrong. :)

If anyone needs a writer/designer, let me know.

  43. Craig Stern said 1 day later:

This is a wonderful competition idea. One song contributed, more to come. :)

  44. Maximus said 1 day later:

You wanna do it in my butt?

  45. Gravy said 2 days later:

I like how both faces in the image are unhappy.

  46. Krux said 2 days later:

there will be frustrated artists, because nobody uses their content.

  47. Sparky said 2 days later:

    Gravy, but they’re happy ducks!

This is a really fun idea, I think I’ll participate.

  48. FISH said 3 days later:

game developers: frowny men or happy ducks?

this is fantastic. i will contribute some art.

  49. Elkovsky said 3 days later:

Hmm… sounds like a decent place to throw out a few tunes… I may have to give this a shot.

  50. TristezaOrange said 4 days later:

I’m joining - I’ll be writing some tunes for this!
