Gratuitous Space Battles

I’ve been meaning to mention that the Gratuitous Space Battles beta is open for people who pre-order the game for $19.95. You can follow the development of the game at Cliffski’s blog.

I thought this was neat:

Man, that single-frame animation is pretty… gratuitous.

  2. Nosgoroth said about 1 hour later:

I might just have to get in on that beta.

  3. Kein said about 2 hours later:

Looks great though I’d like to demo it before I actually plop down the $20

mmmmm… i like cliffsky, i’m not in his kind of games but this one looks promising. For 20$ as preorder anyway i’ll pass, as the gameplay footage shown so far is very confusing to me. Going to wait for a demo before taking this one up

Looks like it could be great fun, but it’s really hard to tell without trying as this sort of game generally comes down to how streamlined the controls/interface are rather than the flashiness of it.

  6. Dunam said about 3 hours later:

I’ve bought 2 of Cliffsky’s games. Both games were great the first 30 minutes and then felt completely without content.

It’s obvious that his attention went into making the demo as fun and promising as possible.

Keep in mind also that he called it “tower defence”. You’re not controlling those ships, just building them.

I bought it shortly after the beta opened, and I’ve been enjoying it quite a bit. Intiailly had a few major imbalances / interface issues, and now it’s a lot better, but I’d still like to see it advance further before release. Also has the occassional crash to desktop, so have to treat everything very gently. That said, I’m definitely having a blast with it, and the combat graphics are very satisfying (probably more so than actually playing it).

Man, I hope the framerate’s slightly higher in the finished verson or the gameplay’s going to suck ;)

bought it, and gotta say I love it. Fits into an almost untouched strategy genre.
