VVVVVV Trailer

Posted by Brandon "BMcC" McCartin Mon, 14 Sep 2009 14:15:00 GMT

Distractionware’s Terry Cavanagh has released this trailer for his upcoming gravity-shifting platformer/exploration game VVVVVV. (Yes, VVVVVV.) Initially a small “design exercise,” VVVVVV has evolved into Terry’s biggest game yet. A few months and nearly 200 screens later, it’s looking great.

Head over to Terry’s dev log for more details and screens. And look for VVVVVV to be released “in the next few weeks.” (Hopefully!)

This is awesome. Especially if it comes with the NES-esque music.

  2. Argh said about 3 hours later:

It’s got a great Jet Set Willy vibe to it with the names of the rooms and the random looking enemy graphics.

    =)

  4. Sam said about 3 hours later:

Like Mighty Jill Off and Tower of Heaven and so forth, another “pixel-perfect jump” platformer that I will seethe and froth at and complete in its entirety.

  5. Technicolorjesuschristsuperstar said about 4 hours later:

Cave Story rip-off, BUT, this looks absolutely amazing. Beatles Rock Band WAS the greatest game this past decade… for a week… Now we have “VVVVVV”, which is now THE greatest game within a decade!

    Hallelujah!

    Sweet!

  6. Eclipse said about 5 hours later:

looks trippy, cannot wait to play it.

    …Beatles Rock band was what?

  7. JoeHonkie said about 5 hours later:

Looks sweet. I love the retro PC font.

  8. Rynen10K said about 5 hours later:

    Oh, hey, SuperJoe.

Even though the mechanic isn’t exactly new (see Metal Storm), it looks like this game expands upon the idea of gravity-switching.

    Should be fun :)

  9. hryx said about 5 hours later:

It’s like he turned the album art from “OK Computer” into a game. Terry Cavanagh keeps winning!

At first I thought this might relate to the multimedia toolkit VVVV.

  10. Annihilator Beta said about 6 hours later:

    One word. Awesome. Cannot wait.

  11. someonespecial said about 6 hours later:

Lookin’ good! I only hope he finds the right balance between puzzles and exploration because, quite honestly, I’m more than a bit tired of “puzzle platformers”. Might have something my general preference for action and/or strategy oriented games but whatever, more power to you, Terry!

  12. Adam94 said about 7 hours later:

Looks awesome. Looking forward to it!

  13. Anthony Flack said about 9 hours later:

Looks fuckin’ rad. Great style, fast and unforgiving-looking platform action, and yeah, that charming Jet Set Willy vibe. Definitely keen.

  14. superflat said about 9 hours later:

    Aye.

  15. handCraftedRadio said about 11 hours later:

looks like I’m going to be playing this one while doing a handstand.

  16. Paul Eres said about 11 hours later:

i don’t get what the green lines do

  17. Paul Eres said about 11 hours later:

oh, to flip twice (figured it out)

  18. Mooseral said about 13 hours later:

Huh, makes me think of the old NES game Metal Storm. Same sort of flip-gravity-avoid-spikes type concept. But still awesome, even today.

Playing with gravity is usually fun, and always funky. Looking good to me!

  19. seth said about 13 hours later:

yeah apparently Terry hadn’t heard of Metal Storm when he made this, so either it’ll just be the same ideas or (from what it looks like) approaching the same concept from an entirely different angle–I like that you can’t jump in this game, where as (i think) you could jump in Metal Storm. Plus MS was very actiony.

  20. Mooseral said about 13 hours later:

This one also appears to have dystopian bits flying around everywhere, which sets it apart somewhat.

Also the fact that the player only changes his own gravity? Metal Storm’s gravity changes affected the whole level, as I recall.

  21. O_o said about 15 hours later:

Scary and awesome in an awesome-I-think-I-would-totally-spazz-out-playing-this-game kind of way. Seems really fun, yet also really hard. Thumbs up anyway for the teaser vid.

  22. guy said about 16 hours later:

Oh hey, gravity inversion. Never seen that gameplay mechanic before.

  23. Anthony Flack said about 17 hours later:

It ain’t what you do, it’s the way that you do it.

  24. boomlinde said about 19 hours later:

Oh hey, gravity inversion. Never seen that gameplay mechanic before.

Oh hey, platform game. What are you trying to say here?

It looks pretty fun, but the music is awful and seems to lack direction. I hope the in-game music will actually be something less obnoxious and more fitting for puzzle game play.

  25. !CE-9 said about 20 hours later:

it’s like the gaming equivalent of pop songs. in a very good way.

yeah, what do the green lines do?

  26. Shortbread said about 20 hours later:

Oh wow i want this so bad. I especially love the music and hope it’s that awesome ingame.

  27. cm said about 22 hours later:

Sometimes you can tell you’re going to suck at a game just by looking at it :\

Looks great, though. I like the level designs.

  28. perse said about 24 hours later:

The music is the best part of the video.

  29. juice said 1 day later:

V6 does look very promising in a Jet Set Willy way :)

That said, a lot of the rooms appear to be lacking in safe starting points - “Give me a V” and “Manic Mine” being examples. Hopefully there’ll be something to balance this out a little!

  30. Ezuku said 1 day later:

Sweet, but looks like it’ll be too difficult for me to play.

  31. boomlinde said 1 day later:

The track itself is not that bad, it’s just that I don’t think it would fit a game, especially not one like this.

  32. Paul Eres said 1 day later:

@ !CE-9 - watching the video carefully, the green lines allow you to flip gravity while in the air, as opposed to only being able to flip it while you’re on the ground

  33. cmpsice said 1 day later:

    loving use of text.

  34. Anthony Flack said 1 day later:

There’s a room called “Manic Mine”? Excellent.

  35. Mailman said 1 day later:

Looks promising! Can’t wait to see the final product!

  36. Chris Whitman said 1 day later:

This looks like awesome fun. Terry’s stuff is usually top notch.

  37. JamesGecko said 1 day later:

This reminds me of an unfinished prototype I made in Games Factory years ago when I first became interested in developing games. At the time I couldn’t figure out how to keep it from getting too easy what with the player using gravity inversion to easily bypass obstacles.

Oh, spikes! Brilliant! And wrapping around the room! Why didn’t I think of that? ;-)

  38. SoulEye said 1 day later:

If you like the music, download them and more at my page! Full versions, HQ bitrates. http://souleye.madtracker.net

ps. Gamedevs can me for project work. ds.

  39. FLaiL said 2 days later:

http://mattmakesgames.com/games.php FLaiL anyone? Gameplay looks exactly like in FLaiL, what is by the way a great game. Total rip-off.

  40. Paul Eres said 2 days later:

you couldn’t manually change your gravity in flail, you had to go into special lights and such

  41. Barf said 4 days later:

    Not enough boobies.

  42. Ark said 4 days later:

    WELL SAID!!!

    Give us BOOBIES

    Gravity defying BOOBIES!!!!!

  43. Xeno said 6 days later:

Very much reminds me of Flail.. looks easier than Flail though!

  44. Nemsin said 7 days later:

    Does flail have boobies?
