Home of the Underdogs: Underdog Harder

Classic abandonware/freeware portal Home of the Underdogs has brilliantly returned from the grave. There really isn’t much else I need to say, except that it has been sorely missed and I will forever owe a debt of gratitude for being the site that introduced me to Nikujin.

Welcome back!

I don’t really understand what is going on. There is the site you gave a link for and there is this one: http://www.homeoftheunderdogs.net/

    (…)

Scratch that, Wikipedia explains it all. There are three different recreations of the Home of the Underdogs, none by Sarinee (the original HOTUD webmaster).

Hotud wants to go beyond the original, homeoftheunderdogs.net is a perfect copy of the old site (but without the games), and there is one other that seems to have the old game descriptions and a new look, but not the games.

Anyway, it’s impressive that a site could spawn three different recreations.

While bonus points for the “X: X harder” title, I don’t think HotU is actually run by the same person, nor does it seem to have all the content of the original.

Also, this is old, it’s been up since March or so. And it’s not the only Home of the Underdog substitute anyway.

  3. mtarini said about 1 hour later:

Hail HotU! Not only it let me replay countless old glories, but it introduced me to the brilliant indie game “Mount and Blade”, probably the game I’ve played the most overall.

  4. Nuttipedia said about 2 hours later:

Interesting trivia: did you know that ALL the games on HotU were invented by Tim Langdell…? Oh, and he invented the internet too.

  5. Omega said about 2 hours later:

Enough about that crap. Just cut it out. Seriously.

  6. Joe/Tom/Tim said about 2 hours later:

I’m deeply sorry for all the pain i have caused.

  7. reuben said about 2 hours later:

Man, HOTU is so good. I remember way back when I was a kid, that site introduced me to classic games. Good to see it’s back (again)!

  8. Gary_Oak said about 2 hours later:

This site isn’t displayed and tells me that I need JReview and a S2 Framework, where can I find them?

  9. Cobalt said about 2 hours later:

@Gary_Oak: What browser are you using? I’m using Firefox and it displays just fine.

  10. TCM said about 2 hours later:

And I’m using IE, and it displays just fine.

  11. Lurker said about 3 hours later:

Its not the same; huge parts of the site are gone; i miss the Hall of Belated Fame for one, that was great

  12. John Evans said about 3 hours later:

Woo, the Underdogs are back! Now I can tell people where to get Master of Magic!

  13. Bbbbaarrry said about 3 hours later:

    It’s just not the same.

  14. Quetz said about 3 hours later:

This is the goodest good news that ever was good news!

  15. Paul Eres said about 3 hours later:

    Can’t stop the signal.

  18. Archagon said about 5 hours later:

There are actually many different HOTU sites now, some better than others.

  19. Trotim said about 5 hours later:

Wait, the Hall of Belated Fame is gone?

  20. Trotim said about 5 hours later:

But what? homeoftheunderdogs is still there and looking fine. Did I miss something?

  21. !CE-9 said about 5 hours later:

    Awesome news. Long live HotU!

  22. Flamebait said about 6 hours later:

One of my favorite sites from way back, nice to see it back in action. Again. After going down, again.

Shame about the stuff that’s missing, like the mass of ratings that were accumulated over time.

  23. Ezuku said about 6 hours later:

Most of the download links aren’t up. Funny though, I actually didn’t download a lot of the old abandonware games because I always assumed they’d “always be there”.

  24. Gabby Jay said about 7 hours later:

    Yay!

  25. fartron said about 7 hours later:

This isn’t the real Home of the Underdogs. That doesn’t exist anymore.

This is one of 3 fan-sites that sprung up in its absence.

  26. xerus said about 7 hours later:

That Gabby Jay comment is gold.

  27. Baltirow said about 8 hours later:

    When was it gone?

I’ve been going to http://www.homeoftheunderdogs.net/ for at least 3 years now and I always thought this was the original?

  28. plvhx said about 9 hours later:

    ‘ey, oh!

glad to see this site starting to pick back up; it was horrible when it went down, and i was surprised by the outpouring of woe and eagerness to reconstruct the wonderful library. it’s great to browse the archive again, in all of it’s early 90’s web-design glory. a little more scratchware, a little less pigsource, although the tigdb will always have it’s place. ;)

  29. gnat said about 9 hours later:

Whats with the constant domain changes? Domain squatters should die. This is an international historic archive.

  30. trav said about 9 hours later:

    WOOOOO! JUBILATION!

  31. adam said about 10 hours later:

    HotU FTW!!

  32. James said about 11 hours later:

There are like three of these things. None of them are run by the original owner.

  34. Riccardo said about 12 hours later:

WOOOOOO, HotU IS BACK!!! Let’s hope it has not lost his shape… but I’m sure that anyway it is it will get better and better whit everyone’s effort :D

  35. Mooseral said about 17 hours later:

    Wait, what?

    http://www.homeoftheunderdogs.net/ http://www.hotud.org/

Now there are two? I can see many reasons for this being true, but still. whatwhat.

  36. Scab said about 23 hours later:

Where’s the porno section? luv those pixeletated babes

  37. negative zero said 1 day later:

wow…how long has it been? HOTU will forever be the ultimate abandonware site on the internets to me. i think i have water in my eyes…

  38. tomelin said 1 day later:

Its like half-a-site without all the search options it had originally…

And also, it doesnt work right in Firefox.

  39. 6_6 said 1 day later:

    don’t forget the other hotu

  40. 6_6 said 1 day later:

or the other other one which doesn’t have any files on it

  41. 6_6_6 said 3 days later:

..or the other one–oh, wait. that’s it.

  42. Joe Larson said 4 days later:

Apparently “There really isn’t much else I need to say” isn’t quite true.

Personally I prefer the one listed here because it’s active. True it doesn’t have the original creator’s touch, but it has the hotud spirit.
