Edmund McMillen and Florian Himsl’s latest game (NSFW), ostensibly named after a favorite word of the presumptive Republican U.S. Presidential nominee John McCain (NSFW), contains somewhat graphic depictions of male and female reproductive organs, sex, and sexually-transmitted diseases (in cartoon form). It is not safe for work. It is only marginally safe for home. It is inappropriate for children. It is inappropriate for adults who are not fond of sex. It is inappropriate for adults who ARE fond of sex.
In short, this game represents a very real threat by “electronic cyber-terrorists” to destroy the American values you hold so dear, so you should probably play it before they take it away from you.

When it starts pissing you have to move away from the pool of piss and wait for it to drain so you can keep damaging it.
After that you have it again in another form, only with blood.

The makers of Coil once again show how deep they are by hiding shitty game mechanics behind tropes of A. Over the top grotesque and bizarre depictions of body parts (particularly reproductive ones, see also the background of the badlands) and/or B. Idealisation of death as salvation that is tired, overdone, and adolescent as Emo pop music. Seriously, have you seen the Gish 2 teaser:

This isn’t art. It’s the bad poetry of high school angst that is nothing but embarrassing.

Seriously though, if drawing and writing about dicks and death is something that honestly comes out when i work, isnt it stil true art? ill make no excused for my obvious obsession with reproduction and mortality, or for the fact that im obviously immature by the majority’s standards, but to say what im doing isnt art just because you dont think its “cool” seems.. wrong.
Im only trying to be as honest as i can with how i choose to express myself, but what are ya gunna do.. but you do seem to know a lot about my work so kudos for that.
Who said that something cool like Gish needs to be “art”?
Also, art becomes cool only when the author is dead.
It’s not that bad. Kind of funny. And very polished, as Flash games go. But I’d still rather play another game of Starcraft than another game of this.
Id rather play another game of starcraft then play any other game, ever.

I was too harsh in calling it not art. It is art. Anything creative is art and I respect your creative energy.
I do know a lot about your work, and I’ve probably played most of the games you have made. Your visual style is never less than extraordinary. I keep coming back to your concept art.
It’s not that your work is not “cool”. My problem is it is overdone, not only in popular media, but by your work. As an artist, your obsession with death and reproduction does not seem to be going anywhere. What message are you trying to get across? You did reproduction and disease in a much better GAME in Viviparous Dumpling. In Cunt the game seems to take a backseat to the visuals and shock factor.
If you are going to do visuals: do visuals. I’d love to see more of your artwork maybe in comic form. But if you are going to make a game I’d like to see deeper gameplay around the issues of life and death.
On that topic I recommend “Issues of Death” by Michael Neill. It’s an interesting look at the Renaissance obsession with death.
As a final note, please consider how you represent reproduction and the feminine, because it seems like this game is pretty misogynist in its presentation of the vagina as the enemy, and source of disease. I understand the game is ludicrous, but be careful in your depictions of women and reproduction. Being offensive is fine, that’s part of art, but don’t be reductive.
Thanks, i do appreciate your response and your motivation to try to push me into more meaningful and “message sending” artistic endeavors, but i dont think you where im coming from here.
My goal was never to send a message or be deep and meaningful to anyone but myself. I realize that my themes might be overdone, but you need to realize, im not doing these things because i think im doing anything original, im doing them because they are things that interest me.
I sit down and write/draw and this is what comes out. its an honest mirror of what intrigues me and what i feel, it may be weird and misogynistic, but that’s only because im also weird and misogynistic. I dont make these games to send messages or impress anyone nor do i apologize for them. I do them for myself, i do them to stay sane, and mostly i do them to (like almost everyone who makes art) to put a piece of myself out there to say.. hey im alive this is a part of who i am.
Again i realize my work is looked at as immature and i tend to run my themes into the ground, but my goal was never to impress anyone other then myself, this is how i grow and learn.
So don’t be surprised if the next 10 games i made fall back into the cycle of reproduction - death, im working something out here in my head. Once the age old question about what happens when you die is answered, then i just might stop finding it so damn interesting to write about.

The gameplay and music do get tedious pretty quickly, but the animations are beautiful.
I wouldn’t have known the theme was supposed to be shocking if I hadn’t seen all these people acting shocked.

I mean that there is a very profound difference between things that are gross, make you uncomfortable, or honestly just squick you out than things which should appropriately be called offensive or tactless.
You see one might be just an intuitive ‘gut’ reaction and the other is a more philosophical issue.
There’s also the matter that if you feel like an author just slapped you in the face, and not for philosophical reasons, you might not be in the intended audience.
