BDTUW is looking good! Made by Lo-Fi Minds for our VGNG Competition, the actual compo entry was a sweet promise of something more… much more! This vid drops its trousers a little lower, revealing brand new areas, characters, and mechanics. Yum!
On the Lo-Fi Minds blog, cactus explains that the aspect ratio has been changed to accommodate HD.

Shaping up nicely!
Am I the only person who didn’t like this as a competition game? Sure, the compo edition looked nice from what it had, but when you’re making games for a competition, they need to be tailored to the fact that you only have two weeks to work on a game. A half-finished tutorial without working spikes just doesn’t cut it. If I had come early enough I wouldn’t have voted for this game in the VGNG poll.
As an actual full game, though, this might not be too bad.
So you’re saying Cactus should spend less time on his games? Hmmmmmmm…
I didn’t vote for it in the VGNG specifically because it was too short, and I’m sure a lot of other people felt the same.
That said, the final game looks to be shaping up really nicely, so I’m fairly unconcerned that the competition entry was so short, since it inspired something extra-awesome.
Very excited about this game. Also have to hand it to my man Phlogiston for laying down some cool music. The first half reminds me of Little Nemo: Dream Master for the NES. Can’t think of a better game soundtrack to be reminded of.
TIGS is a fanboy site.
I don’t really play Cactus’s other games, as I am not a fan of shooters. Brain Dead Toon Underworld, though, looks like it’s going to rock my world :) I really like the constantly-rotating low-rez pixel art. The tiled levels also remind me of all the good Apogee games I used to play (Commander Keen, Hocus Pocus, etc). Exciting!
another cave story rip off?
Looks great. Low-res pixel art scaled up and rotated looks really nice. That area with the moon in the back was especially great.
“TIGS is a fanboy site.”
Don’t worry: I also hate it when people like things.
looks neat-o
Is every platformer a Cave Story rip-off now?
No, really, I don’t know the answer to that. It could easily be yes or no. Opinions?
Looks great, I can see this being one of my favorites. How is it a Cave Story ripoff?
@Foxblitzz: I’m pretty sure the spikes not working was intentional. I don’t think it’ll change any time soon.
“If I had come early enough”
That’s what she said!!
Amirite?
Rip Story Caveoff?
YOU DECIDE. JOHN MADDEN DOESN’T.
But John Madden is so indie D: On the topic of the game it boggles the mind and inspires that little cell at the back of the head thats saying “draw a dog, I know you cant draw a dog, but do it any way”
@Sergio Every game made after cave story is clearly a cave story rip-off, and also some previous ones…. like mario.
@Cactus I like the way you’re polishing more your games now
Wanna play wanna play wanna play.
Especially the manslaughter part with the skull fella.
this looks awesome and not like a cave-story ripoff in any way shape or form.
i love cactus
It’s kinda cute the way tigpeople over react about the simplest things.
Obviously you have to give Cactus some credit for his non-stop production and his occasional gems, but having multiple orgasms over a shallow run-and-jump platformer maybe goes a little too far.
And I’m not even just talking about Cactus’ stuff. Anything with a “indie” label seems to be automagically “made of awesome” around here.
Maybe giving some more serious critique would be better for the community as a whole. We don’t need to lose the sense of partnership nor need to act like dickhead nitpickers.
(The music is hot, though, and the pixel-vector-ish graphics are interesting)
“Lo-Fi Minds”
“the aspect ratio has been changed to accommodate HD.”
irony?
“having multiple orgasms over a shallow run-and-jump platformer maybe goes a little too far.”
So multiple orgasms are when you say things like “shaping up nicely” and “looks awesome?” Are you sure you know what an orgasm is?
Please think carefully before responding.
It looks like You Have To Burn The Rope, but with sterile graphics and without meaning (and plot).
But it will change your miserable life because you’re a fanboy!
I love the hate
It’s just like YHTBTR, because it’s 2D and it has graphics. Total ripoff. And although the plot doesn’t make much sense, that doesn’t mean it’s got to be written off as inexistent.
While it is ridiculous to smoth a game you haven’t really played with love, it’s just as ridiculous to smother it in hate.
It’s not ripoff, it just looks boring and sterile. I like the music, though.
Oh wait, cactus didn’t write the music. It was another guy :D
I dont know cactus, it looks like a bewjeweled rip off…
I demand to be a beta tester. Please :D
You spelled my name wrong :(
This game is such a ripoff of The Caveside.
I love those ripoff-naming compos… What’s the prize?
Am I the only person who almost puked from nausea watching the trailer?
If the game camera really is that fluid, I’ll get vertigo seconds into starting play.
Really? No, I had no problems with it. I thought it looked… majestic.
Yes Jorge, you’re the only one.
If that trailer sets you off, good luck playing any game ever other than Myst, because honestly there’s nothing different about it.
The only thing the camera does is zoom out when the character is moving.
I’m with you, Jorge.
I bet none of them fanboys could explain WHY they like his style (I doubt they even know what the word “style” means).
Please explain to me, when a style is good and when not. And while you’re at it, please explain to me what beauty is, too…
Also it’s one thing argumenting against fanboys… but being a hateboy doesn’t improve anything either..
Concerning criticism - it’s quite hard to criticise a game that you only have seen a video of. How much constructive criticism can you give that’s not on superficial things like graphics and music?
But back on topic - up to now the game looks quite funky but for me there’s still something missing, that’d really catch my attention (although that propeller hat is a real good start!)
The fact that Cactus produces his games very fast isn’t a real good argument for Cactus’s greatness, but I have got respect for him because of the fact that his games are so graphically diverse and contain many original ideas which he manages to deliver polished and challenging.
Just as Cactus’s popularity seems to grow (by getting the opportunity to start Lo-Fi Minds for instance), the admiration by some people seems to low. I think that’s silly. Psychosomnium was his only platformer, really. Plus, it was not a real game like Clean Asia, but an experiment. So this is gonna be his first real platformer, and it looks pretty damn interesting if you ask me. I want to cheer for his hard work and not draw a comparison between Cave Story, which is real stupid. That game took 5 years to make and belongs to a complete different genre.
I’m looking forward to this one.
you can tell he’s fallen in love with the project. Good for him! I can’t wait to play it.
This game is obviously a Call of Duty 4 rip-off.
