You Have to Burn the Rope

With so much uncertainty in the world today… sometimes a nice, straightforward video game is exactly what the doctor ordered.

Great game !!!
Too bad it lasts less than the decay period of a subatomic particle in a particle accelerator.
I wanted more… but that would defeat the point wouldn’t it…
I dont get it, I managed to get through the tunnel, but I cant beat the boss, I found the fire and the rope thing thats holding the big thing over the boss… but I dont know what to do. the tiniest hint would help.
damn it I’m going back to playing myst, this is too hard (>.<)
That was cute. It would be nice to see more.
Loved the ending song.
Make sure you have the latest flash player. Otherwise it won’t work right, and it’ll just start playing the ending music as soon as you click start, and you won’t be able to move correctly.
Am I right in guessing that the whole point of the game is to have a “Still Alive”-ish ending song for a video game? :D Anyway, quite nice none the less. Even though there were only about 60 seconds of gameplay it shows that an ending summing up what you’ve done throughout the game and the outcome of it works nicely. Although I guess it’s quite obvious that this is better than some kind of “You made it! Congratulations! Now have fun with the main menu again!”. Neat song :)
I cried.
Would like an mp3 of the song!
I had my wife try this. Unfortunately, she found the platforming very difficult so it pretty much neutralized the humor. She’s really good at 2D console platformers like Super Mario World, and passable at Super Mario Galaxy, so I was really surprised.
I think it’s kind of interesting how a small change in the input method ruined the game for her. It almost justifies the rampant cloning in the casual games industry–they don’t want to alienate their (paying) audience.
I guess this is the only game with walktrough longer than the actual game.
Good point MisterX, but although this looks kinda like portal rip-off, we all know the truth..
Cavestory ripoff!!
mp3 was linked on the page http://www.reachground.se/2008/03/31/you-have-to-burn-the-rope/ woo
Tried to beat it without burning the rope. what a fool i was.
Haha, if this qualifies as an “art game”, it’s definitely the best one I’ve ever played. Great stuff :)
Death animation on the boss is Cave Story ripoff.
Death animation on the boss is The Underside ripoff.
Death is a ripoff. :)
AWESOME game… truly amazing credit song… just something so catch about it I played it about 6 times.
Also if anyone is serious about the whole not being able to kill the boss then there is something seriously wrong with you… the whole “burn the rope, weapons don’t hurt the boss”
but it seems that they are all joking…
The rope is a lie!
last boss is tough
There are walkthroughs for those with difficutlies defeating the end boss :D
This is definitely competing with Portal for Best Ending Song Ever.
Frickin’ hilarious!
8-bit gun tales rip off
so i get that you’re supposed to cut the rope with your ax but it’s not doing anything help
I beat the game. Life is meaningless now!
hay guise
what do you have to do in this game
I’m a freaking hero people!
guess they composed the song first and then thought - hey lets do a game around it ;D
Challenge laser sauce hero front-butt launch paunch zero!
Now how am I gonna spend the rest of this day? I guess I’ll playlist the song and listen to it over and over.
You’re all heroes! :)
I need a hero I’m holding out for at hero ‘till the end of the night He’s gotta be strong And he’s gotta be fast And he’s gotta be fresh from the fight
I need a hero!
I’m so annoyed right now. Mr Kian AKA Mazapan let’s me create the music right? Well that might be so but I still don’t understand how to beat the game. And don’t point me to some tutorial-walkthrough-crap. I did them. Still no clue ):
Ahhh…I get it…you just…
…no! Still nothing.
Man, that game was hard. I’ve managed to beat games like Cave Story and Super Mario World with ease, but this is impossible. How the hell do you kill that last boss?!
WE DONT NEED ANOTHER HERO….ah pooch.
But really, that game made my day.
In soviet Russia, the rope burns you!
you have to use the portal gun to destroy the different cores.
I hereby challenge the TIGS community to a speedrun contest.
I don’t know about ‘games as art’, but I’m certainly behind the concept of ‘games as joke’.
I’m detecting hints of shadow of the colossus as well as portal.
this is the best game i have ever played
That song was better then the body of Mike Patton’s work combined.
Game should’ve been 30x length.
“Soviet Russia” jokes stopped being funny approximately 2 hours before they were created.
but wow… those 2 hours were a blast!
The tragedies that happen every day, right under our noses… that rope’s never gonna get another chance at life. That rope’s never gonna get another chance at holding up that ominous chandelier. That rope’s never gonna get his life back. And it’s all our fault.
sob what’s about chandelier? it victim too
Well damn, I had so much fun throwing those axes. The physics and collision on them were so advanced! Too bad they’re useless.
Afterall, there is nothing in life that can’t be solved by burning it with fire.
This has got to be a joke. It’s not terribly cool at all.
@GIRLFLASH you have to burn the rope! well, you have to take one of the flames, jump up above the platforms quickly before the flame disappear and then jump against the rope.
Anyway this game was pretty nice, too bad is a joke game, i’d love to see it with more levels
oh LOL, there’s also a manual here for who wasn’t able to burn that rope http://www.mazapan.se/YouHaveToBurnTheRopeManual/
Woohoo! I’m invinceble!
It’s probably possible to beat it without burning the rope… probably…
(I’m not trying it.)
without cheating?
I’ll have to post up my speed run. Once I figure out how to record it.
“Eclipse said about 21 hours later:
@GIRLFLASH you have to burn the rope! well, you have to take one of the flames, jump up above the platforms quickly before the flame disappear and then jump against the rope.
Anyway this game was pretty nice, too bad is a joke game, i’d love to see it with more levels”
you are the smartest person
At first I felt a bit shortchanged when the game finished so quickly, but I also felt a sense of satisfaction, boosted by the ending song. Perhaps that is the simple goal of the designer, to give players a sense of satisfaction with very little work? Casual games try at this all the time but none are quite as satisfying as the ending of You Have to Burn the Rope.
Game of Year
g…goty. goty 2008
Dude, I’m the hero… It even sang a song im my honor at the end!
That was tough to beat!
Haha, Kian, I’m sure kista grossen was a lot of help to you in making this game. :D
Dangit I miss the cheap sodas. Need to go there again.
Anyhow, thousands of heroes were just made! WHOOP!
guys help plz i’m stuck on first boss after the tunel
i ran up on the platform and i shoot my axis at him but he regenrates???
plz help i dont want to start over
Jad: Those sodas are really cheap! I love Kista Grossen, couldn’t have done the game without it! Let me know next time you’re there so I can recommend some really nice halal meat.
So Roger Ebert said that video games could never be classified as art, and I guess he’s entitled to his opinion. As this game proves, however, they can sometimes be classified as fairly decent comedy. :)
Argh. Comment 42 beat me to the punch. My bad.
