Burn the Trash

Our friend cactus has released what appears to be some kind of “glitchcore shmup” that he lovingly dubbed “The Ugliest Game Ever.” It’s called Burn the Trash (direct download) and it does look rather like an ugly wool sweater knitted by your grandma, but it plays a lot better! Score!

In the game you can “burn trash (enemies)” or “burn bullets” and switch between two ships that each specialize in one of those things. Overheating can occur if you burn too long, depending on which ship you’re using. It’s a neat mechanic, and the “ugly” graphics and electronic music complement the gameplay quite nicely.

That is, if you don’t have epilepsy. Seriously, if you have epilepsy, for the LOVE OF KENTA CHO DON’T PLAY THIS GAME.

    I love this game!

    Ugly. As. Sin.

It’s like Warning Forever was tossed under a bus and made to run on an Atari 2600.

That said, I want more. Although the soundtrack could have been a little more “glitchcore” (power-noise meets circuit bending?), this is certainly the start of something fantastic.

Meh, not that ugly. Pretty fun though, I recommend it.

    holy shit! amazing!

that cactus, he has a VERY strong sense of aesthetic. this pleases me in ways i like to be pleased.

  6. Neon said about 7 hours later:

    my background is black…

  7. Melly said about 8 hours later:

That game scarred my eyes forever (or just for 5 minutes). Cactus should really put a health warning on this thing.

    Other than that it’s fun.

  8. juice said about 20 hours later:

Woo - I’m currently 13th in the high score table. I just need to grab a beer and get back into the zone…

It’s a strange little game, with a couple of glitches (enemies hang around after you die if you restart too quickly, really doesn’t like dual-monitor setups, seems very CPU intensive at higher levels, even on my AMD x64 3700), but it’s redeemed with it’s lo-fi semi-retro look and a DnB backing tune that goes surprisingly well with the noise of trash going up in flames.

This is the sort of art-innovation-experiment that makes indy games worthy. Mr Cactus gets a gold star :)

  9. Mr Peckerston said about 22 hours later:

The mechanics of the game seem to be unbalanced as hell (never change ship, hold Z and X all the time, and let go of Z for a split-second whenever you’re about to overheat or get shot) but I LOVE the style of it :)

  10. Neon said 1 day later:

Mr Peclerston beat me too it.

  11. Madamluna said 1 day later:

    ahhhhh god MY EYES

I have a headache now. But it was fun!

  12. Wolverine said 5 days later:

I like the graphic style more than the gameplay to be honest. The effects were the only thing keeping me playing really…
