Defcon Interview

Subversion

Game journalist extraordinaire Kieron Gillen (or Keer-eon Gill-eon as I like to call him), sits down for a chat and a spot of tea with Introversion’s Chris Delay.

“Comparing DEFCON to our other games is difficult. Uplink is rugged and buggy and ugly and still sells more than Darwinia every day. Darwinia is our oddball second album, our very own love letter to the Amiga and the soul of great videogames, and the game I’m most proud of. DEFCON is a relatively simple multiplayer game idea and I think that’s probably the key to its success.”

“Introversion are the closest the 00s have to a genuine underground heroes”

    … what.

  2. Underwhelmed said about 4 hours later:

The blockheaded self admiration of these guys really hurts my ability to want to play anything else they have or will make. At this point I want them to go belly up just to put in end to this self stylization “we are your heroes” crap.

Yeah fu** these fa99075. Their gamez sux0r anyway.

  4. hkian said about 5 hours later:

There is no Zerg rush that simply cannot be defeated.

I stopped reading it right there. You’re pretty shit at starcraft if you think a Zerg rush is unbeatable. In Southern Korea, Terran rushes YOU!

  5. Aubrey said about 6 hours later:

Although it’s fun to watch, I still have no idea why everyone on TIGsource acts like Introversion have had a go on their mothers. Just the arrogance, is it?

  6. Optrirominiluikus said about 6 hours later:

    doG, I love Darwinia.

  7. Optrirominiluikus said about 6 hours later:

BTW, Who the fuck cares about Starcraft?

  8. buttgas said about 7 hours later:

I love Introversion, I’ve pirated everything they made. And I don’t know what their new secret project is, but they’re doing a really nice job with some really cool procedural content, and that has me a little excited/jealous.

  9. monkeybutts said about 9 hours later:

But I wanted to be the poster child for indie games waaaaaaaah.

  10. Isador21 said about 10 hours later:

They make some real nice games, too bad people still find a way to try and bring them down … as Aubrey said, must be arrogance …

  11. Derek said about 10 hours later:

Wow, these are some of the most munged comments I’ve ever read on this site.

  12. Optrirominiluikus said about 11 hours later:

Face it Derek, you got pwned.

  13. Derek said about 11 hours later:

I did, man. I got pwned pretty hard.

  14. Dan MacDonald said about 15 hours later:

I think it’s Introversion’s arrogance that causes other people to be arrogant about them.

Especially if you consider yourself a bedroom coder. Them calling themselves “the last” is sort of disinheriting you.

  15. Oh Snap said about 19 hours later:

You just got dissed by the DMac

  16. failrate said 1 day later:

I am presuming this is the indie games equivalent of the hip-hop feud, innit?

To whit, “No, I am the original hardcore playah”, “Nay, says I, that is me”.

Simply replace “original hardcore playah” with “last bedroom coder”, and any references to “motherfucker” with “cougar hunter”, and there you go.

  17. Twisted Rabbit said 1 day later:

That made me cry. It hurt my self esteem. Darwinia rocks, it is that simple.

  18. PHeMoX said 1 day later:

“Especially if you consider yourself a bedroom coder. Them calling themselves “the last” is sort of disinheriting you.”

True, as is to many others aswell, it’s not like there are no other ‘bedroom programmers’ besides Introversion Software. In fact, I’d almost not consider Introversion Software to be ‘true indies’ anymore basically. I totally dislike their arrogance, it’s misplaced really.

Darwinia isn’t really thát good, eventhough it’s a hell of an original game, I give them that, however I actually liked their Uplink and DEFCON games way way better when it comes to gameplay and replay values.

I didn’t buy Darwinia, but did buy the other two games, I especially like DEFCON and play it quite a lot still.

I think Introversion Software has to learn to be more modest, because they are not at all.

  19. PHeMoX said 1 day later:

“Especially if you consider yourself a bedroom coder. Them calling themselves “the last” is sort of disinheriting you.”

By the way, when it comes to Derek, he could practically go for ‘first of the legendary bedroom programmers’, although there’s a whole ‘Clickteam’ generation out there I guess.^^

  20. Fost said 1 day later:

What’s with the ban on mentioning cults here?

  21. m00ps said 2 days later:
