After months of woe and questions of whether or not it will ever see the light of day, Pixel has released a work-in-progress demo version of his upcoming shooter. And it’s rad!

Some notes from Pixel, as translated by the one and only Shih Tzu and paraphrased by me:

– The game is not yet complete.
– There are five stages in the demo.
– Arrow keys to move and Ctrl to fire.
– There is gamepad support.

The game also automatically stores play records for Pixel’s analysis (if you email them to him). And you can change the controls if you’d like.

Download here. It’s kinda tough… but what great shooter isn’t?

Thanks BenH!

Also: If you drag and drop your play records on to the open game, it plays them back for you! (Thanks, Jimbob!)

Update: Here’s a direct download link via selectbutton. -Derek

wow… news move fast. I was just about to post my impressions… :D

  • Jimbob

Yeh, if you drag and drop your records into the game it plays them. Pretty sweet.

    @Tim: Haha, I can see it now…

“Sad news. There are no cakes in Pixel’s shooter.” :P

@Jimbob: Oh, sweet! I’ll put that in the story.

Yeha it’s kinda tough… to find the damn download link!?! Did he pull it off the site?

  • Derek

Heh, sorry, I forgot Pixel’s site does that.

I meant to link to his desktop page.

  • Tim

    there’s like… five links in that post… yum… cakes…

  • Jimmy

    This game is haaaard.

  • Tim

    it’s no bullet hall.

I only made it to the second boss. Daaamn, this game is tough. It’s pretty cruel to start the player with one life, and only give one life after bosses. Definitely suffers from the Gradius powerup-death effect, too, and I’m not a fan of having the entire ship be a hitzone. At least there’s checkpoints, although a level save system or even continues would be nice. Tight engine, though. Fun to play. (Yes, I do suck at shooters, but I can’t stop playing them. Must be a form of masochism.)

  • Derek

Wicked game! I got to the level 3 boss and died. The shield from Boss 1 is nice!

Like all great games this one just gets better as you play it and you only appreciate the little touches as you start to experiment and adapt. However, the ol’ Gradius death penalty should have been abolished a long time ago. It is a flawed system that only exists today as a result of heritage and that is not reason enough for something so infuriating.

  • Chris

Apart from the whole ‘Gradius death’ thing that everyone seems to mention, I love this game. There’s definitely been a lot of thought put into the level design, and I can’t wait to see what it’s like once it’s finished.

I recorded a full playthrough for those people who have macs or are terrible at shooters, but Youtube won’t let anyone apply for a 10+ minute video account at the moment :(

  • Xander

Dammit you wonderful bastard of a game! Why must our relationship be so labourious you labour of love! WAKKA WAKKA!

Translation; Blimey, it’s pretty tough huh? Fun though!

  • Hot Lava Tales

Chris, can you put it in sendspace (or some other download hosting site)? I would really like to see it.

  • Jimbob

Chris: Can’t you just host the really small file that records it (in the play-records folder)?

Either way, Tim’s got a few replays here:

  • Chris

Oh yeah, that’s a good point. The video is here (for people who have macs or whatever):

Just go to Tim’s site and get a replay if you’ve got the game but can’t complete it :)
