Line Rider (Beta)

Line Rider

The creator of Line Rider makes this declaration at the beginning of his game’s description:

“Its not a game, its a toy. What i mean is there is no goals to achive and there is no score.”

It’s an interesting distinction he’s making, but it’s not enough to prevent me from posting it on TIGSource. Which stands for The Independent Gaming Source, not The Independent Toy Source. That would be a different acronym…

You get what I’m saying here?

In any case, Line Rider is only beta and it’s pretty fun, if a bit unwieldy. Draw lines and have a little guy ride them. Ride them so dirty.

With a little imagination and determination, you could even come up with scenarios like this.

The distinction between game and toy is very interesting– especially when you start to employ your “imagination and determination”– in effect, playing a game with the toy. Which, really, is the fate of most toys, is it not? We establish rules and goals, conventions and “special moves”, whether we are playing with sticks in the backyard or mice at work when no one is looking. I don’t mean to make this sound negative towards games (versus toys)– though I do think that someone who plays with a toy as a toy alone is not only very rare but also probably a cat.

You could say that a set of GameDev tools is a toy.

Maybe games are like toys where the crucial rules are preset. So, to the games-as-art argument, the selection of the rules is what gives a game its set of meanings / possible interpretations.
