Custom Wars

What do we have here? Why, another attempt to fan-make a sequel (whether spiritual or otherwise) of Advance Wars! It’s named Custom Wars by the way. I couldn’t fit the previous statement without causing the sentence to lose its impact.
So far it has done something that nintey percent of internet projects have not done – make an alpha version! To be true, the interface is a bit ugly, but new units and new COs are already playable – and made in Java, to boot.
Lots of creative talent has gone into the making of Custom Wars (via a anyone-can-contribute-style of submissions. It could be you!), and it’ll be awesome for fans of one of the most enjoyable and addictive TBS games— if it makes it all the way to the final version without being Cease and Desisted.
Oh hell! Knock on wood!

The Commonplace Book Compo is over!

Meh, I doubt the big “N” will bother with a C&D. They’ve actually been laying off that practice for a while now, (Though they still seem to like to protect Metroid).
I mean hell, Advance Wars by Web & Fire Emblem by Web have been going strong for a while now with seemingly no word from nintendo.
Still, this is outright IP theft and they wouldn’t have a leg to stand on if faced with a C&D, which isn’t a totally unrealistic occurence. I really don’t know why these types of projects don’t get the makeover they need to protect themselves from the lawyers - it’s such basic common sense that you’re left with the only reasonable explanation possible: that they actually are deliberately trying to generate more ineterst through highjacking other people’s IP.
I should say, “possible” IP theft, as I have not played it or seen screenshots etc. The logo is certainly lawyer-bait.
Truly, they could have identical gameplay and just a different graphical style or theme, and they’d be in the clear. However, this is just a lot like doujin or fanfic. It’s not necessarily the gameplay as love of the entire ouvre that inspires the developers.
Did you see that Rattigan CO?
Hot DAMN he was sexy.

Wow. I was suprised to find this.
Don’t worry, it’s not like we’re claiming ownership over Intelligent System’s stuff, we’re giving credit where credit is due.
